The FBI is setting up command centers at all of its 56 field offices across the country ahead of the July 4 weekend, to monitor any potential terrorist threats, law enforcement sources have revealed. 

Sources told Fox News that local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. will be reporting any information about possible attacks to these command centers - where officials will decide how to respond.

The move comes amid growing fears that the terror group ISIS is working to awaken sleeper cells in Western nations, after sympathizers were linked to three back-to-back attacks in France, Kuwait and Tunisia last Friday.

While the FBI says there has been no specific credible threat so far, it seems to be more active in its warnings and actions ahead of Independence Day this year than previously.

Another law enforcement source told Fox that the FBI has even been working to take known sympathizers for groups like ISIS off the streets of America before the symbolic holiday.

hat could mean arresting these alleged sympathizers on U.S. soil on lesser charges and building a broader case while they are temporarily in custody over the holiday weekend.

The FBI is specifically concerned about targets like shopping malls - where there are large groups of people but relatively little security.

Rep Mike McCaul, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security has already warned Americans to 'remain vigilant' to terror attacks.

He also said that ISIS was no longer a regionalized threat but a global one.

‘I am extremely concerned that Syrian and ISIS recruiters can use the internet at lightning speeds to recruit followers in the United States, with thousands of followers in the United States, and then activate them to do whatever they want to do,’ he said, during an appearance on Fox News Sunday.

‘Whether it’s military installations, law enforcement or possibly a Fourth of July event parade.’

He added that America’s response had been slow in comparison to extremists’ rapid advancement of their internet presence.

Referring to the terror attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait last Friday, he said: ‘In light of the three attacks in three hours on three continents overseas, (it) shows us that ISIS is not just regionalized like the administration says, only in Iraq and Syria, but rather demonstrates a global threat - that they can conduct external operations and they’re very savvy doing that over the internet.'

A gunman opened fire on a beach packed with tourists in Tunisia, killing 38; a decapitated body was found after an attacker rammed his car into a gas container, triggering an explosion in France, and a suicide bomber attacker a Shiite mosque in Kuwait City, killed 27 and injuring 227. There is as yet no evidence that the attacks were coordinated. 

Meanwhile the FBI has issued a warning to local law enforcement officials across America about a heightened risk of terror attacks targeting Independence Day celebrations this weekend.

No specific threat has been made by the terror group but bulletins are frequently issued in advance of major U.S. holidays. 

The Institute for the Study of War, an influential think tank based in Washington DC, says that ISIS is soon likely to target other Western nations like the UK, France, Spain and Italy.

Terrorism experts say the threats should not be taken lightly.  

Federal investigators have disrupted a number of ISIS-inspired plots in recent weeks, including a planned assault earlier this month on police officers in Boston.

Authorities shot the alleged attacker, Usaamah Rahim, before he could attack officers with military-style knives.

An Islamic State suspect in New York was also arrested in a separate incident after he attacked an FBI agent with a kitchen knife during a search of his home.

Fareed Mumuni, 21, has now been charged with attempted murder and is accused of plotting to use pressure-cooker explosives and knives to kill police officers.

THE 'ISIS MASTERPLAN': EXPERTS PREDICT THE CALIPHATE'S NEXT STEPS 

Islamic State - known as ISIS - will mark the holy month of Ramadan and the first anniversary of its self-imposed caliphate by launching bloody attacks on the West and activating 'terror cells' in countries as far east as the Philippines, respected terrorism analysts predict.

The Sunni Muslim extremist group already controls large swathes of land across Iraq, Syria and Libya - where more than eight million people live under its brutal regime. And it has formed partnerships with other extremist groups across the Middle East and north Africa.

Now the terror group will capitalize on religious tension and wars to plunge as much of the world into chaos as it can by July 18 - when the Muslim holy month of Ramadan ends - according to the American-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

In the ISW report 'ISIS Military Operations During Ramadan', which was published on June 7, it correctly predicted the terrorists would execute a 'mass casualty attack' in Tunisia, which has become a 'breeding ground' for the extremists in recent years. 

ISW also said ISIS would target Shia mosques in the Middle East.

Last Friday three terror attacks targeted three continents within three hours.

An ISW counter-terrorism analyst, Harleen Ghambir, told MailOnline: 'These attacks came days after ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani urged its followers to launch attacks during Ramadan, as death this month is considered more valuable than in other months.

Ms Ghambir added: 'We have been watching ISIS increasingly gain support among followers in Tunisia over the past few months, and that attack confirms that ISIS intends to use that support to encourage attacks against tourists and Western targets.'

As many as 2,400 Tunisians have joined ISIS on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria since 2011. Four hundred of them have since returned to the country, where it is feared they may use their fighting knowledge to strike, its Interior Ministry has said.

ISW predicts that ISIS will also mastermind 'lone wolf attacks' on countries with smaller Muslim populations, such as the United States, the UK, Canada and Australia.

Its experts claim the countries ISIS has specifically announced as targets are the United States, England, France, Italy, Spain, the Caucuses region of southern Russia, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Dozens of other nations, including Greece, Romania and Australia, are at risk of deadly 'surprise attacks', it adds.

This morning Pope Francis received in audience the participants in the international congress promoted by the International Council of Christians and Jews, held in Rome from 28 June to 1 July on the theme “The fiftieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate: the past, present and future of relations between Jews and Christians." Here is a Vatican-provided translation of his address:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am pleased that your meeting is taking place this year in Rome, the city where the Apostles Peter and Paul are buried. For all Christians, both Apostles are an important point of reference: they are like “pillars” of the Church. Here in Rome, we also find the most ancient Jewish community in Western Europe, whose origins can be traced to the time of the Maccabees. Christians and Jews therefore have lived together in Rome for almost two thousand years, even though their relations in the course of history have not been without difficulty.

The development of an authentic fraternal dialogue has been made possible since the Second Vatican Council, following the promulgation of the Declaration Nostra Aetate. This document represents a definitive “yes” to the Jewish roots of Christianity and an irrevocable “no” to anti-Semitism. (??)

In celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate, we are able to see the rich fruits which it has brought about and to gratefully appraise Jewish-Catholic dialogue. In this way, we can express our thanks to God for all the good which has been realized in terms of friendship and mutual understanding these past fifty years, as his Holy Spirit has accompanied our efforts in dialogue. Our fragmented humanity, mistrust and pride have been overcome thanks to the Spirit of Almighty God, in such a way that trust and fraternity between us have continued to grow. We are strangers no more, but friends, and brothers and sisters. Even with our different perspectives, we confess one God, Creator of the Universe and Lord of history. And he, in his infinite goodness and wisdom, always blesses our commitment to dialogue.

Christians, all Christians, have Jewish roots. Because of this, since its inception, the International Council of Christians and Jews has welcomed the various Christian confessions. Each of them, in its own way, has drawn near to Judaism, which in its time, has been distinguished by diverse trends and sensibilities. 

The Christian confessions find their unity in Christ; Judaism finds its unity in the Torah. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh in the world; for Jews the Word of God is present above all in the Torah. Both faith traditions find their foundation in the One God, the God of the Covenant, who reveals himself through his Word. In seeking a right attitude towards God, Christians turn to Christ as the fount of new life, and Jews to the teaching of the Torah. This pattern of theological reflection on the relationship between Judaism and Christianity arises precisely from Nostra Aetate (cf. no. 4), and upon this solid basis can be developed yet further.

In its reflection on Judaism, the Second Vatican Council took account of the ten theses of Seelisberg, formulated in that Swiss town in 1947. These theses are closely linked to the founding of the International Council of Christians and Jews. We can say that there was already in embryonic form an initial concept of cooperation between your organization and the Catholic Church. This cooperation was officially inaugurated after the Council, and especially after the establishment of our Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews in 1947. This Commission of the Holy See always follows your organization’s activities with great interest, in particular the annual international meetings, which offer a notable contribution to Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Francis is not the only pope facing a divorce dilemma

Copts form the vast majority of Egypt’s eight to ten million Christians, and while most observers regard the idea of removing their pope as a long-shot, they say the uprising reflects real discontent over the extent to which Church authorities try to assert control over the private lives of their followers.

“People don’t like him very much, because he has a violent temper and he’s seen as aggressive,” said Mina Thabet, a Coptic researcher on human rights. “There’s a real problem between the pope and the people.” When it comes to the substance of the divorce question, Francis and Tawadros are drawing fire from opposite sides.

The Catholic leader is generally seen as a moderate, with conservatives alarmed that he might relax his Church’s rules banning communion to anyone who divorces and remarries outside the Catholic Church. Tawadros is seen as a hard-liner, staunchly opposed to allowing Copts to dissolve their marriages under virtually any circumstances.

That stance is controversial in this majority Muslim nation, where the government recognizes the authority of religious institutions to regulate matters of personal status such as marriage. There’s no civil marriage in Egypt, so Christians are obliged to marry through the Coptic Church. Likewise, they must ask the Church if they want a divorce. And while they can appeal to a civil court if the Church refuses, those courts generally side with the religious authorities.

Not so long ago, the Coptic Church had a more relaxed stance.

Under a 1938 Church law, Copts were permitted to divorce for nine reasons, including insanity, sexual aversion, and abandonment. The list also included “irreconcilable differences,” an elastic term that made obtaining a divorce fairly routine.

That changed in 2008 under Tawadros’ predecessor, Pope Shenouda III, who restricted divorce exclusively to cases of adultery and conversion to Islam or another Christian denomination.

Some Copts have been protesting ever since.

In 2011, a movement was founded called “Coptic 38” to campaign to go back to the earlier, more permissive rules. When he took office three years ago, Tawadros rejected that suggestion out of hand.

Despite the criticism, Tawadros appears to have the backing of other Coptic leaders.

On June 25, a traditional Church body called a “millet council” in Alexandria rejected calls for the pope’s removal, calling the selection of the Coptic leader a “divine choice” that cannot be undone.

Certainly the generally conservative ethos of the Church’s leadership suggests Tawadros won’t find much resistance for keeping reformers at bay.

On Sunday, for instance, Bishop Rafael, a runner-up in the selection process for pope three years ago, called homosexuality a result of a “perverted upbringing or sick desires” in response to the recent US Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage.

Likewise, although other Christian denominations in Egypt won’t take sides on an internal Coptic dispute, most of their bishops would undoubtedly back Tawadros since virtually all churches here have the same line on divorce.

Copts are a defiant bunch, however, and there’s no telling how their dissidents might push back.

In the early 1950s, a group of Coptic youth actually kidnapped the pope at the time, Joseph II, and took him to a monastery to force him to sign a letter of abdication over charges of corruption and simony, the selling of ecclesiastical office. Police rescued the pope and returned him to power, but a year later he lost the support of his own bishops and stepped down.

There’s little indication any such putsch against Tawadros is in the cards, yet there are signs his stance is driving a few Copts away. Estimates provided by Peter Ramses El-Naggar, a lawyer who’s part of the “38” movement, are that since 2008 some 1,200 Copts have converted to Islam, which permits divorce, and that 4,000 more have tried to pursue a civil divorce or joined another Christian denomination.

Aside from the coincidence that another pope is wrestling with the same problem, Francis may want to take note of the Egyptian debate for another reason. If he relaxes the Catholic position on divorce and remarriage, it could create ecumenical tensions with churches such as the Coptic Orthodox currently struggling to hold the line.

No matter what happens to Tawadros, the turmoil illustrates a hard truth which, by now, must be clear to his fellow pope in Rome too: When it comes to divorce and remarriage, somebody’s going to be unhappy no matter what you do.

Should Menzingen ask Rome for recognition?
No! How can apostates grant such a petition?

In the latest issue of the Society of St Pius X’s internal publication (mainly for Society priests), “Cor Unum,” the Superior General publishes arguments to defend and justify his relentless pursuit of the SSPX’s incorporation into the mainstream Church. He argues that the Society is right to be talking to today’s Roman officials. He presents basically two arguments. These need to be examined if they are not to continue creating confusion.

The first of the two arguments runs as follows: The Catholic Church, as the Immaculate Bride of Christ, is much more than just its corrupt officials, because it is a whole of which these officials are merely a part. But the Catholic Society of St Pius X must remain in contact with the Catholic Church. Therefore it must maintain contact, and continue to negotiate, with the corrupt officials.

The argument is easy to refute, as soon as one brings into view the Faith. Indeed Catholics must draw from the Immaculate Bride of Christ whatever they need to get to Heaven, but it is never from the corruption of the corrupt Church officials that they will be able to draw their spiritual life. And if these officials are so corrupt in the Faith that contact with them positively endangers that faith of Catholics which is the very basis of Catholics’ spiritual life, then Catholics must positively avoid such officials. Now the neo-modernism of today’s Roman officials is highly corrupt and corrupting, all the more objectively dangerous for its being more or less, on their part, subjectively innocent. Therefore Catholics wishing to keep the faith must stay well away from these Romans. “Cor Unum” argues as though neo-modernists present no danger to the Faith!

Archbishop Lefebvre drew the correct conclusion. When in the spring of 1988 he did everything he could have done (even, one may say, more than he should have done) to get the Roman officials to do their duty to look after Catholic Tradition, and even after over 10 years of the Archbishop’s efforts, they still refused, showing that, far from wanting to look after Tradition, they merely wanted to absorb it into their Newchurch, then the Archbishop concluded they they were so corrupt in the Faith that he would have nothing more to do with them until they professed once more the Faith of the great anti-liberal papal documents, such as the Syllabus, Pascendi, and Quas Primas.

For indeed the Faith does not exist for the appointed Church officials, but they exist for the Faith. So if their fruits demonstrate beyond any doubt that they are destroying the Faith, then, to defend the Faith, not only should the Society not be talking to the Conciliar officials, it should, while observing all charity and respect, be fleeing them like the plague, for fear of itself being infected by their dangerously infectious Conciliar errors, unless and until, exactly as Archbishop Lefebvre said, they show that they are quitting their Conciliarism and coming back to true Catholic doctrine.

The second argument is that Rome’s granting of bishops to visit the Society’s seminaries (including Écône) is proof of Rome’s “benevolence” towards the Society, because Rome is “at a loss how to deal with the Society.” And once more a swallow here and there is taken to be signifying the summer of Rome’s conversion. The naivety is breathtaking. Rome knows exactly how to deal with the Society: send Conciliar bishops into Society seminaries to show its future priests how nice the Conciliar churchmen are. Then eventually the Society will just flow into the Newchurch.

The SSPX has no business to be asking for anything whatsoever from these Roman officials, appointees perhaps, apostates certainly. And if it gives them to think that, objectively and collectively, they are anything other than apostates, it will be “like to them, a liar” (cf. Jn. VIII, 55).

Fatima Reversed?

Is Russia’s Consecration out of date?
It’s indispensable, however late.

When on June 13, 1929, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to Sister Lucy at Tuy in Spain to ask for the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, it made perfect sense, because ever since the Russian Revolution broke out in October, 1917, Russia had been persecuting the Church and acting as the main instrument of Communism to spread its deadly errors throughout the world. However, Russia is now playing such a different part on the stage of world affairs that a number of Catholics are wondering if that Consecration is still needed. Has it not been overtaken by events?

True, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the Russian people began to repudiate the godless Communism under which they had suffered so much for 70 years, and since then they have not ceased to evolve towards God instead of away from him. Leading this evolution has been Russia’a Prime Minister or President since 1999, Vladimir Putin (born in 1952), who by his personal example and public leadership has done all he could to promote the real revival of the Christian Orthodox religion within Russia. Some observers still doubt that Putin is genuine, but the fruits are there: thousands of churches and cathedrals rebuilt all over Russia and morality defended, while outside of Russia Putin has more than once delayed the outbreak of World War III by outwitting the delinquent Western politicians, puppets of the godless New World Order and pushing for its triumph.

Then can one say that Russia today no longer needs to be converted? No, because Orthodox Christianity is not yet Catholicism, and because Communism has reportedly left its mark on the morals of the Russian people, for instance in the still widespread practice of abortion. But what one can surely say is that by the present religious revival, witnessed for many a year now by Western visitors to Russia, Our Lady is preparing for the full conversion of Russia, and while that full conversion may no longer be needed to put an end to Russian Communism, in the 21^st century it may be even more needed to overcome world Globalism. Let us speculate on how that might happen.

To break out of the aggressive encirclement of Russia by military bases of a nameless western power which has let itself be instrumentalist by the evil Masters of Globalism, Russia, the apparent but not the real aggressor (the two are not always the same), invades and conquers Europe thoroughly corrupted by atheistic materialism. Under the pressure of war and occupation, the Pope at last performs the Consecration of Russia, as requested by Our Lady at Fatima, and the miraculous full conversion begins to take place, but not to the putrid religion of Conciliar Rome, rather to a brand-new (and brand-old) Catholicism (Mt.XIII, 52), in which all the Truth of Eternal Rome and of the once faithful West is revitalized by the religious freshness of the post-Communist Russians drawing on everything truest and best in their own Eastern traditions.

Wishful thinking? The details here stitched together from prophecies, and even the grand lines of the speculation can be wrong, but in any case some such miracle will be wrought by Our Lady to cleanse the East of its errors and the West of its corruption, so that the Church can again breathe with both lungs, and so that there can come about that “period of peace for the world” which she promised at Fatima. In any case believers will be crying out with St Paul, “O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways!” (Rom. XI, 33). If we are among the survivors, we shall be marveling at the works of God and of his Blessed Mother.

Supreme Court redefines marriage throughout US!!

Washington D.C., Jun 26, 2015 / 08:07 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In a wide-reaching decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has declared that same-sex “marriage” is a constitutional right and that states must recognize same-sex unions contracted as marriages in other states.

By a vote of 5-4, the court ruled June 26 that states must recognize same-sex “marriages” under the 14th Amendment, and recognize such unions contracted in other states.

The decision in Obergefell v. Hodges dealt with claims that Ohio’s marriage law discriminated by not recognizing same-sex unions contracted as marriages in other states. Several other states were also facing similar cases on the constitutionality of state marriage laws. 

Backers of marriage as a union of one man and one woman argued that marriage is intrinsically connected to the procreation of children and cannot be redefined. Some also said the matter should be left to the people and the states and not decided in court when so much disagreement on the matter persists.

Backers of “gay marriage” asserted a fundamental right to marry whomever one loves, saying that failure to redefine marriage amounts to decimation. 

Same-sex “marriage” was not firmly established in any U.S. state until 2004, after a Massachusetts court ruled that the state must give marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

In response to that ruling, some had called for a federal constitutional amendment to protect the definition of marriage. Voters in 30 states have passed constitutional amendments and referenda strengthening the legal definition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman. Many of these efforts have been overturned in state or federal court challenges.

In 2013, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal from supporters of California’s defense-of-marriage amendment, Proposition 8, which California officials had refused to defend in court. The Supreme Court said that the appeal did not have legal standing and allowed a lower state court’s overruling of the proposition to take effect.

The Supreme Court itself has declined to review several recent appeals seeking to defend state marriage laws against lower court decisions.

Also in 2013, a 5-4 ruling from the Supreme Court struck down aspects of the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act. The court claimed that a provision defining marriage as a union of one man and one woman for federal purposes violated the U.S. constitution’s equal protection guarantees. The ruling said that the federal government must recognize “gay marriages” in individual states if the states choose to recognize them. 

The Defense of Marriage Act had passed Congress overwhelmingly and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton after a Hawaii court ruling briefly recognized such unions.

Increasing requirements for recognition of same-sex unions as marriages, combined with state anti-discrimination laws, have caused growing conflict with religious freedom.

Parents in some school districts have faced difficulty in exempting their children from classes voicing approval of same-sex relationships, while small businesses with moral reservations about participating in same-sex ceremonies have faced discrimination lawsuits. Catholic-run adoption agencies have been forced to close because the law would require them to place children with same-sex couples against their religious beliefs.

The consequences for religious freedom were a topic of the court’s deliberations in Obergefell v. Hodges. U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verilli at one point acknowledged that the high court’s approval of a legal right to same-sex “marriage” could mean problems for the tax-exempt status of colleges with objections to recognizing the unions.

The Paraguayan gay activist who will meet with Pope Francis next month was surprised and encouraged by his invitation to the gathering, although he recognizes there are limits to how much the Catholic Church is likely to evolve on LGBT issues.

“I think the movement has to celebrate this moment, despite the ongoing debate whether the church is really undergoing a profound change,” Simón Cazal told Fusion in an interview published today. He will be among a group of Paraguayan civil society leaders meeting with the pope July 11 in Asuncíon, Paraguay’s capital city. It will mark Pope Francis’s first meeting with a married gay activist in a public forum.

Cazal, executive director of LGBT group SomosGay, was invited to the meeting by the Paraguayan Catholic bishops’ conference, which cited his group’s impact on society. He married fellow SomosGay activist Sergio López in Argentina in 2012, but their marriage is not recognized in Paraguay, which has few civil rights protections for LGBT people.

“The social climate is a big challenge for a movement like ours,” Cazal toldFusion. Some of the country’s leaders still cling to the mindset of the dictatorship of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner, who ruled Paraguay from 1945 to 1989. LGBT people suffered routine persecution under his regime; in one particularly infamous instance, in 1959, 108 men suspected of being gay were arrested and tortured. Cazal sees reason for hope in the attitudes of Paraguay’s youth. “Young people in Paraguay today didn’t grow up under the military dictatorship, so they have a different perspective on the world,” he said.

Still, much needs to change in the nation, he said. When meeting with Pope Francis, he plans to bring up antigay violence, such as the police’s brutal treatment of LGBT protesters gathered outside the Organization of American States’ annual meeting last year.

At least one other Paraguayan LGBT group turned down an invitation to meet with the pope. “There is a lot of marketing around the pope,” Rosa Posa, head of lesbian rights group Aireana, told local media. “If they think he’s going to listen, well, good luck.”

Cazal, however, is happy to have the meeting, although not expecting major doctrinal changes from the pope. “I see a lot of contradictions in his public messages,” he told Fusion. “But we have to live with those contradictions, and realize there are still limits at the Vatican.”

Homosexuals can attend a Catholic family congress in Philadelphia during Pope Francis' U.S. visit this year but won't be allowed to use it to attack Church teachings, the city's archbishop said on Thursday.

"We don't want to provide a platform at the meeting for people to lobby for positions contrary to the life of our Church," said Archbishop Charles Chaput. The Catholic Church teaches homosexuality is not sinful but homosexual acts are.

"We are not providing that kind of lobbying opportunity," he told a news conference presenting the September 22-27 congress known as the World Meeting of Families.

Gay Catholic groups and families headed by gay Catholics had asked for an official presence at the gathering to present their view that homosexuals should be fully welcomed in the Church.

The pope will attend the last two days of the Philadelphia meeting at the end of a trip that will take him to Cuba as well as New York and Washington.

About 15,000 people from around the world are expected to attend the family congress to hear lectures and take part in workshops on family issues before the pope arrives to close the gathering.

"We hope that everyone feels welcome and certainly people who have experienced same-sex attraction are welcome like everyone else," Chaput said.

Bishop John McIntyre, also of Philadelphia, said the only event dedicated to gay issues at the congress will be one by Ron Belgau, a celibate gay Catholic and founder of the Spiritual Friendship Initiative.

McIntyre said Belgau "will talk about his own coming to terms with his sexual orientation and the manner in which he embraced the teachings of the Church" and his mother will also speak.

The programme for an event Belgau addressed last year at the University of Notre Dame said he spoke of "a faithful and orthodox response to the challenge of homosexuality".

Catholic gay couples have contested the Church's ban on homosexual activity, saying it deprives them of the intimacy that is part of a loving relationship.

It will be the eighth World Meeting of Families since the event was started by the late Pope John Paul in 1994 to promote traditional family values. It is held every three years in a different city.

Organizers said they expect up to two million people to attend the final event, a Mass by the pope on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, a boulevard that runs through they city.

Cardinal Kurt Koch read the message before the group gathered at a conference held at the Centro Pro Unione in Rome on Tuesday evening

In his message, Pope Francis expressed his thankfulness “to Almighty God for the meaningful ecumenical relationship which we enjoy today” inspired by the desire for unity of the Church of Christ and by “the scandal of division between Christians.”

Recalling his Post-apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, he emphasized that realities are more important than ideas, he urged the group to find ways to effect a united diakonia, aimed at addressing the concrete needs of “suffering humanity.”

He challenged the group to address “crucial ecumenical issues” and ended with a prayer that God might grant “the gift of full visible unity among all Christians, so that the Church will ever more be a sign of hope to the world and an instrument of reconciliation for all peoples.”

The fiftieth anniversary of the Joint Working Group between the Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches is an occasion of thanksgiving to Almighty God for the meaningful ecumenical relationship which we enjoy today. So too, it is a moment to thank the Lord for all that the ecumenical movement has achieved since its beginning over one hundred years ago, inspired by a longing for the unity which Christ intended for his body, the Church, and by an emerging sense of sorrow for the scandal of division between Christians.

Since its inauguration in 1965, the Joint Working Group has fostered the necessary conditions for a greater common witness of the Catholic Church and the Churches and Ecclesial Communities of the World Council of Churches. Reflecting on these past fifty years, we should be encouraged by the collaboration which the Joint Working Group has promoted, not only in ecumenical issues, but also in the areas of interreligious dialogue, peace and social justice, and works of charity and humanitarian aid. The Joint Working Group should not be an inward-looking forum. Rather, it must become ever more a "think-tank", open to all the opportunities and challenges facing the Churches today in their mission of accompanying suffering humanity on the path to the Kingdom, by imbuing society and culture with Gospel truths and values.

In my Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I noted that realities are more important than ideas (cf. no. 233). The Joint Working Group must be oriented to addressing the real concerns of the Churches throughout the world. In this way, it will be better suited to proposing collaborative steps that not only draw the Churches closer together, but also ensure that they offer an effectivediakonia suited to the people's needs.

In fulfilling this task, the Joint Working Group distinguishes itself by its own character and aims. The nine reports produced thus far bear witness to the growing understanding and appreciation of the bonds of brotherhood and reconciliation which, in the context of the changing landscape of Christianity in the modern world, sustain Christians in their common witness and evangelizing mission. We must recognize, though, that in spite of the many ecumenical achievements of the past half century, Christian mission and witness still suffer due to our divisions. Disagreements on various subjects - in particular anthropological, ethical and social issues, as well as issues related to the understanding of the nature and conditions of the unity we seek - demand further sustained efforts.

Our dialogue must continue! I encourage the Joint Working Group to further its discussion on crucial ecumenical issues and, at the same time, to promote ways for Christians to testify together to the real, though imperfect, communion shared by all the baptized. May we always trust that the Holy Spirit will continue to assist and guide our journey, often in new and sometimes unexpected ways.

This anniversary similarly is an opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who, these past fifty years, have tirelessly served the cause of Christian unity and advanced the joyful proclamation of the Gospel (cf. Mt 28:18-20). Let us join together in imploring our heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, to grant us the gift of full visible unity among all Christians, so that the Church will ever more be a sign of hope to the world and an instrument of reconciliation for all peoples.

Bergoglio is sending a ‘Full Fledged Heretic’to Synod on the Family…

ROME — A Belgian bishop who has called on the Church to welcome same-sex couples will get to bring his case straight to Pope Francis.

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Bishop Johan Bonny of Antwerp will serve as a delegate to October’s Synod on the Family. His appointment adds intellectual heft and star power to the liberal flank of bishops pushing for the Church to change how it approaches Catholics living in “irregular situations.”

Bonny’s views, however, may be vigorously resisted by other synod members announced by the Vatican Tuesday, including prelates from Africa and Poland.

Bonny, 59, made waves in December when he said the Church must accept “a diversity of forms” when it comes to relationships, according to an interview he gave to a Belgian newspaper, translated by the National Catholic Reporter. “Personally, I find that in the Church, more space must be given to acknowledge the actual quality of gay and lesbian couples; and such a form of shared life should meet the same criteria as found in an ecclesiastical marriage,” he said. “We have to acknowledge that such criteria can be found in a diversity of relationships, and one needs to search for various models to give form to those relationships.”

Bonny is one of 65 bishops named in a Vatican bulletin today who will participate in the synod, which is a continuation of a synod on families held last October that featured sometimes-rancorous discussions of Communion for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics, same-sex relationships, and various societal and economic pressures facing families. Bishops’ conferences in each country or region select delegates and submit them to the Vatican for approval, which is done on a rolling basis. Announcements of other participants were made earlier this year.

Last September, Bonny released a 22-page letter laying out his hopes for last October’s synod and offering clues about what he may bring to this year’s session.

Concerning marriage, for example, Bonny wrote that it has changed through the centuries, undercutting activists who say marriage hasn’t changed for millennium.

He suggested the Church has something to learn from same-sex couples: “The present day legalization of civil partnership and marriage between people of the same gender has led to new situations and insights concerning marriage and family life.”

Bonny also suggested that the Church should admit Catholics who divorced, but remarried without an annulment, to Communion.

Speaking about his visits to parishes, Bonny wrote, “I cannot imagine what it would mean for the children and for their future bond with the Church community if I were to refuse Communion at that moment to all parents, grandparents, and other family members who find themselves in ‘irregular’ marital situations.”

He said withholding Communion could harm the future of the Church. (???)

“It would be fatal for the liturgical celebration, for the relationship between the families in question and the Church community, and primarily for the continued faith development of the children involved,” he said.

The first part of the synod on the family provided a platform for an unprecedented discussion of sensitive topics related to family life. A report issued halfway through the two-week event said that bishops had discussed the pastoral needs of gay Catholics, opening up Communion to the divorced and remarried, contraception and family planning, as well as the theological notion of “graduality,” or highlighting the good in relationships that might not live up to the Church’s ideal.

Conservatives at the synod slammed the mid-term report, saying it was incomplete and did not reflect the wide range of views expressed during the meeting to that point. The final report approved by bishops watered down some of the more liberal language, so it’s unlikely that Bonny’s views will go unchallenged this fall.

For example, members of Poland’s delegation, also named officially Tuesday, have promised to fight any attempts at change, noting specifically their opposition to proposals from German bishops to loosen Church rules.

“We certainly won’t be going in the theological direction presented by certain German-speaking circles,” Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki told the Catholic Herald Monday. “We believe the output of Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI, and recent statements by Pope Francis, are enough to view Church teaching as a continuum, not as a revolution.”

Some African prelates, too, have said they will toe the party line come October.

“Be conscious of the mission of the Church; protect the sacredness of marriage which is now being attacked by all forms of ideologies that intend to destroy the family in Africa,” Cardinal Robert Sarah told bishops gathered in Ghana last week. “Do not be afraid to stress the teaching of the Church on marriage.”

Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi of Lubango, Angola, who chairs the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, echoed that view: “Africa will speak with one voice at the next Synod — with one voice we will present the challenges and successes of family life in Africa.”

  

(Whether this promised unity plays out is debatable, especially in light of a statement by Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra, Ghana, to Crux in February that he’d vote in favor of allowing Communion for divorced and remarried Catholics.)

Further, the US delegation, named in February, includes bishops known for their strong promotion of Catholic orthodoxy on family issues. Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville and Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, the president and vice president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, will represent the United States, along with Philadelphia’s Archbishop Charles Chaput and Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles.

Although all four are considered right-of-center, reflecting the conservative leanings of the American hierarchy, Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich, who last week challenged bishops for failing to include poverty in their strategic plan, was elected as an alternate delegate.

The second part of the synod on the family meets Oct. 4-25 at the Vatican.
