NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - NINTH DAY

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN
                        PURGATORY
           By St. Alphonsus de Liguori

There are none of us who expect to be lost. We know and feel the greatness of the risk we are running but to expect to be lost would be the sin of despair. Hell is only practical to us as a motive of greater diligence, greater strictness, greater circumspectness, greater fear. But it is not so with Purgatory. All of us expect or think ourselves sure, to go there. If we do not think much of the matter at all, then we may have some vague notion of going straight to heaven as soon as we are judged. But if we seriously reflect upon it, upon our own lives, upon God’s sanctity, upon what we read in books of devotion and the lives of the Saints, it is hard to conceive any one of us expecting to escape Purgatory, and not rather feeling that it must be almost a stretch of the divine mercy which will get us even there. It would more likely be vain presumption than heroic hope, if we thought otherwise.

                     Ninth Day
Great are all the sufferings of the holy souls the fire, the grief, the darkness, the uncertainty of the time of their deliverance from prison; but the greatest of all these sorrows is this, that these holy souls are separated from their divine Spouse, and deprived of His beatific vision.

                        Prayer
O my God! how was it possible that I, for so many years, have borne tranquilly the separation from Thee and Thy holy grace! O infinite Goodness, how long-suffering hast Thou shown Thyself to me! Henceforth, I shall love Thee above all things. I am deeply sorry for having offended Thee; I promise rather to die than to again offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance, and do not permit that I should ever again fall into sin. Have compassion on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. I pray Thee, moderate their sufferings; shorten the time of their misery; call them soon unto Thee in heaven, that they may behold Thee face to face, and forever love Thee. Mary, Mother of Mercy, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession, and pray for us also who are still in danger of eternal damnation.

                    Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

                 Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - EIGHTH DAY

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN
                         PURGATORY
           By St. Alphonsus de Liguori

         October 24 -November 1

The doctrine of Purgatory gives to Catholics comfort and joy. They feel the black gulf of death is bridged across and they are still knit together to those near and dear to them in the bonds of love and sympathy. The sting of death and the sharpness of its sorrow is mitigated by the thought they are still bound to these departed by the golden chain of prayer. Death is thus robbed of much of its terror and the separation of friends becomes endurable.

With this beautiful belief the Catholic standing at the open grave is no longer mute and puzzled but finds vent for his grief in earnest petitions to God on behalf of his loved ones. Funeral services are no longer an empty pageant with lengthy eulogies designed to glorify the departed and sympathize with the living. These and other pious devotions become clothed with deep and real significance and are used as a practical means of assisting the souls of the dead to arrive at their heavenly home.

                     Eighth Day
Another bitter sorrow of these souls is caused by the reflection that God had distinguished them by so many graces not granted to others, and that they compelled Him, by their sins, to condemn them to these sufferings, and that they had deserved hell, and were pardoned and saved only by the mercy of God.

                        Prayer
O my God! I also am one of these ungrateful beings, having received so much grace, and yet despised Thy love and deserved to be cast by Thee into hell. But Thy infinite good ness has spared me until now. Therefore, I now love Thee above all things, and I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. I will rather die than ever again offend Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.

Amen.

                 Hail Mary

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - SEVENTH DAY

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN
                         PURGATORY

          By St. Alphonsus de Liguori

We do not know where Purgatory is, neither can any man tell the length of time during which a soul may be detained there. The only way the holy souls can discharge their debt, i. e., satisfy for the punishment due to their sins on earth, is through suffering on their own part or by being assisted by the prayers and good works of the faithful on earth, by indulgences gained and applied to them and above all by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The souls can merit nor satisfy no more; the time for that ended with death. They can do nothing to help themselves and so they look to us to assist them in discharging their debt to the last farthing.

                    Seventh Day
A further great sorrow of these holy souls consists in their ardent desire for the beatific vision. Slowly and painfully the moments of their purgatorial imprisonment pass by; for, they love God deeply, and desire to be delivered from their sad prison to praise Him forever.

                        Prayer
O God, Father of Mercy, satisfy this their ardent desire! Send them Thy holy Angel to announce to them that Thou, their Father, art now reconciled with them through the suffering and death of Jesus, and that the moment of their deliverance has arrived.

Amen.

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - SIXTH DAY

As to the punishment the holy souls undergo it is certain they suffer the pain of loss, i. e., are debarred for a time through their own fault from enjoying the vision of God in heaven. This suffering is undoubtedly keener than any other. It is the common teaching that the holy souls undergo some pain of sense, some positive suffering through the application of fire, and it is most generally believed that it is a real material fire, though such has never been defined as a dogma of faith.

                        Sixth Day
The holy souls are, indeed, comforted by the recollection of the passion of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, since they know they are saved by the passion of Jesus Christ, and have received, and still receive, so much consolation from Holy Masses and Holy Communions. Nevertheless, they are greatly pained by the recollection of their ingratitude for these two great gifts of the love of Jesus Christ.

                          Prayer
O my Divine Redeemer, Thou didst die for me on the Cross, and hast so often united Thyself with me in Holy Communion, and I have repaid Thee only with ingratitude. Now, however, I love Thee above all things, O supreme God; and I am more grieved at my offenses against Thee than at any other evil. I will rather die than offend Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. Mary, Mother of God, come to their aid with thy powerful intercession.

Amen.

Prayer to Our Suffering Saviour for the Souls in Purgatory

R.  Have mercy on them, O Lord, have mercy on them.

V. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel Scourging, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord, have mercy on them.

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - FIFTH DAY

Devotion for the dead does not rest in words and feelings, nor does it merely lead to action indirectly and at last. It is action itself, and thus it is a substantial devotion. It speaks and a deed is done, it loves and a pain is lessened, it sacrifices and a soul is delivered. Nothing can be more solid.
The royal devotion of the Church is the Works of Mercy and see how they are all satisfied in this devotion for the dead. It feeds the hungry souls with Jesus, the Bread of Angels. It gives them to drink, in their incomparable thirst, His precious Blood. It clothes the naked with a robe of glory. It visits the sick with mighty powers to heal, and at the least consoles them by the visit. It frees the captive with a heavenly and eternal freedom, from a bondage dreader by far than death. It takes in the strangers and heaven is the hospice into which it receives them. It buries the dead in the Bosom of Jesus, in everlasting rest.

                        Fifth Day
Another great suffering is caused these holy souls by the ignorance of the time of their deliverance. They are certain of being one day released, yet the uncertainty of the time when their purgatorial term will have ended, gives them great pain.

                       Prayer

Woe to me, unhappy being, if Thou, O Lord, hadst cast me into hell; for from that dungeon of eternal pain there is no deliverance. I love Thee above all things, O infinite God and I am sincerely sorry for having offended Thee again. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. O Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

Amen.

Prayer to Our Suffering Saviour for the Souls in Purgatory
V. O most sweet Jesus, through that sweat of blood which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these holy souls.
R.  Have mercy on them, O Lord, have mercy on them.

V. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel Scourging, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord, have mercy on them.

V. O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most painful Crowning with Thorns, have mercy on them.

V. O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain which Thou didst suffer in breathing forth Thy Blessed Soul, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord, have mercy on them.

Novena to St. Charles Borromeo

    Novena to St. Charles Borromeo
          October 26 – November 3

Glorious St. Charles, by the joy which you found from tender infancy in the practices of piety, obtain for me, I pray, a constant and tender affection for all religious exercises.

Glory be
Glory be, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O glorious St. Charles, model for ecclesiastics, by your generous detachment from all worldly concerns and by your zeal for the glory of God, and the relief of the poor, obtain for me, I pray, the grace to apply myself, like you, faithfully to all the duties which belong to the holy state to which it has pleased God to call me.

Glory be
Glory be, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O glorious St. Charles, whose care it was to observe in the most minute details and most perfectly the discipline of holy Church, obtain for me, I pray, the grace ever to love tenderly and observe exactly our holy Rule and Customs.

Glory be
Glory be, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O glorious St. Charles, who always prepared for death by the sanctity of your life, and accepted it with holy joy when it overtook you in the midst of your most glorious career: obtain for me, I pray, the grace always to accept, with Christian resignation, all that is painful to the senses which it shall please the Lord to send me; and that my life may be a continual preparation for death; so that when I arrive at my great passage, instead of feeling the terror of the sinner, I may enjoy the peace of the just, a prelude to eternal blessedness with the elect in heaven.

Glory be
Glory be, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY - FOURTH DAY

NOVENA FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN
                         PURGATORY
           By St. Alphonsus de Liguori

         October 24 -November 1
The Council of Trent tells us “That there is a Purgatory and that the souls there detained are assisted by the suffrages of the faithful, but especially by the Most acceptable Sacrifice of the Altar.”
The Council of Florence defined “If men have died penitent in the love of God, and before they have made satisfaction by fruits worthy of penance for sins of omission and of commission, their souls are purified after death by the pains of Purgatory and to the relief of these pains avail alms and other offices of piety.”

It will be noticed how guarded and exact is the Church’s doctrine on the subject.

All we are compelled to believe as part of the faith is:

1. There is a Purgatory.

2. Souls suffer there after death for their sins.

3. We can help relieve them. To these simple dogmatic statements there are other points of belief held in general concerning the purgatorial state though not defined as articles of faith. It is certain the holy souls are saved. There is no possibility of them ever losing the state of grace for they cannot sin in the least degree nor is there a source or cause of sin present to them.

                     Fourth Day
The pain that still more afflicts these holy souls, the spouses of Jesus, is the thought of having, during life, displeased by their sins that God Whom they so ardently love. Some penitents have felt so much pain and sorrow in thinking of having, by their sins, offended so good a God, that they died of grief. The souls in Purgatory understand far better than we do, the claims that God has to our love; they love Him with all their strength. Hence, at the thought of having offended Him during life, they experience pain that surpasses all other pain.

                        Prayer
O my God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I am sorry with my whole heart for having offended Thee. I promise to die rather than ever offend Thee more. Give me holy perseverance; have pity on me, and have pity on those holy souls that burn in the cleansing fire and love Thee with all their hearts. O Mary, Mother of God, assist them by thy powerful prayers.

Amen.

           By St. Alphonsus de Liguori

         October 24 -November 1

                     Third Day
Another great pain of the holy souls is caused by the hideous vision of their guilt, for which they now suffer. In this life, the hideousness of sin is not seen as in the life to come; and this is one of the greatest sufferings of Purgatory.

                       Prayer
O my God! because Thou art infinite goodness, I love Thee above all things, and repent with my whole heart of my offenses against Thee. Grant me the grace of holy perseverance. Have compassion on me, and, at the same time, on the holy souls suffering in Purgatory. And thou, Mary, Mother of God, come to their assistance with thy powerful intercession.

NOVENA TO ST. JUDE - NINTH DAY

        Novena in preparation for the
Feast of Ss. Simon and Jude

                      Ninth Day
O holy Saint Jude, apostle and martyr, grant that we may so dispose our lives that we may always be pleasing to God. In working out our salvation in this life we have many needs and necessities. Today we turn to you, asking you to intercede for us and obtain for us the favors we ask of God. Especially do we petition for...

        (Mention your request)

May we not so much seek temporal good but rather what will avail our souls, knowing that it will profit us nothing if we gain the whole world yet suffer the loss of our soul. Therefore, may we incline ourselves toward the divine will, seeing God's good and gracious purpose in all our trials. Amen. St. Jude, pray for us. My Jesus, mercy.
