The rains that are breaking down on Serbia and Bosnia for two days, have crippled the entire population. About 15,000 people were evacuated from towns and resorts under water. There are about 17 deaths.
Rescuers, along with more than 10,000 volunteers are doing everything possible to rescue the trapped people, using helicopters and boats. For now, the IDPs are accommodated in hotels, sports centers, in the spaces of the Belgrade Fair.
The most serious problem is the risk of flooding, particularly in the rivers Sava, Kolubara, Drina, Danube , whose peak is expected in the coming hours.According to the Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic “must be rescued most of the people remained isolated in homes or took refuge on the roofs, in places near these rivers” . The water is threatening the country’s main power plant.
Kristalina Georgieva , European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, was immediately activated to respond to the needs of supply and experts, requested by Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Once again we have shown that the EU’s neighbors can count on us in difficult times “, said the woman.
Blankets, cloakrooms, but especially baby food are the subject of appeals. In the cities of the two countries have organized collection centers and aid funds. This morning, Russia has sent a plane carrying a team of specialists in emergency relief. During the day it is expected a second planeload of food and medicines.
An improvement in the weather is expected next week. Today the rains have decreased in intensity.
“The disastrous floods in Serbia these days are the admonition of God for the great mass of sins that you see around,” says the Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Irinej. These, also includes among the sins of the Gay Pride parade in Belgrade on May 31, a homosexual rally, calling it “the peak of an iceberg of immorality, a set of sins and vices.”
Statement of the Orthodox patriarch made today is the International Day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, recurrence promoted by the EU since 2007 which is celebrated on May 17 every year. The aim of the day is to promote and coordinate international events to raise awareness and prevention to address the problem of homophobia.
