ST ANNE 1
St. Anne
Saint Anne (also known as Ann or Anna, from Hebrew Hannah, meaning “favor” or “grace”) of David’s house and line, was the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ.  Anne’s name and that of her husband Joachim come only from New Testament apocrypha, of which the Protoevangelium of James (written perhaps around 150) seems to be the earliest that mentions them. The story bears a similarity to that of the birth of Samuel, whose mother Hannah had also been childless. Although Anne receives little attention in the Western church prior to the late 12th century, dedications to Anne in the Eastern Church occur as early as the 6th century. In the Eastern Orthodox Churches and Eastern Catholic Churches, she is revered as Hanna. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Hannah, is ascribed the title Forbear of God, and both the Birth of Mary and the Dedication of Mary to the Temple are celebrated as two of the Twelve Great Feasts. The Dormition of Hanna is also a minor feast in the Eastern Church.

EPISTLE: Wisdom: Proverbs 31. 10-31
Lesson from the Book of Wisdom
[Description of all the necessary duties and virtues of the valiant woman.]
Who shall find a valiant woman? Far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. The heart of her husband trusteth in her, and he shall have no need of spoils. She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She hath sought wool and flax, and hath wrought by the counsel of her hands. She is like the merchant’s ship, she bringeth her bread for afar. And she hath risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and victuals to her maidens. She hath considered a field, and bought it: with the fruit of her hands she hath planted a vineyard. She hath girded her loins with strength, and hath strengthened her arm. She hath tasted and seen that her traffic is good: her lamp shall not be put out in the night. She hath put out her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle. She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor. She shall not fear for her house in the cold of snow: for all her domestics are clothed with double garments. She hath made for herself clothing of tapestry: fine linen, and purple is her clothing. Her husband is honorable in the gates, when he sitteth among the senators of the land. She made fine linen and sold it, and delivered a girdle to the Chanaanite. Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day. She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of the clemency is on her tongue. She hath looked well to the paths of her house, and hath not eaten her bread idle. Her children rose up,and called her blessed: her husband, and he praised her. Many daughters have gathered together riches: thou hast surpassed them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: the woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.
GRADUAL:  Ps. 44, 8
Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity. Therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness.
Alleluia, alleluia
Grace is poured abroad in thy lips: therefore hath God blessed thee forever. Alleluia.
GOSPEL:  Matthew 13. 44-52

† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew
[The parables of the hidden treasure, of the pearl of great price and of the net cast into the sea.]
At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth the field. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls. Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way, and sold all that he had, and bought it. Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a net cast into the sea, and gathering together all kind of fishes. Which, when it was filled, they drew out, and sitting by the shore, they chose out the good into vessels, but they bad they cast forth. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have ye understood all these things? They say to Him: Yes. He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.

Reflection from – Dom Guéranger
“Anne” means “grace.” You are a child of grace.
Saint Anne – “Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, as that is the official title awarded him the Church; it is also its greatest claim to fame. As a result, it should store the celebration of this day even more among the parties of the Savior and among the saints. Anne! The grandmother of the Lord in the flesh! The apocryphal Proto-Gospel of Jacques says that pious husband Joachim and Anne enjoyed a certain ease which they used liberally. Of their annual income they were three parts: one for the poor, one for the temple, and the last for their own subsistence. But a great grief grieved their days despite their persevering prayers they remained childless. It was a great humiliation for Anne the eyes of his servants, and he came to her husband to be publicly expelled from the temple when he wanted to drop his offering because God had denied him his blessing.
The heart of an immense pain, Joachim fled into solitude and cried out to God his distress. And an angel gave him then hear this message: “Joachim, your prayer has been heard. A girl you will be given and you will call Mary. It will be from childhood, devoted to God and filled with the Holy Spirit. “At the same time Anne had a similar revelation. Both then hastened to the temple to thank the Lord and met, beaming at the golden gate of the sanctuary.
What is the truth in this legend? We do not know; she learns at least as great souls ripen in the school of suffering, and to cooperate in the work of redemption, he must himself bear his cross. Even though we would ignore all of St. Anne, we cannot always represent us as the mother of the Virgin Mary and grandmother of Our Lord, as the noble woman, strong, proven? “As result, such a tree,” says the proverb.
What was Anne, liturgical texts we suggest? The Epistle’s portrayed as the “strong woman” who assiduously vak its housework, watches over his servants, assists the poor and devoted to her husband.
The Gospel reveals the source and secret of his greatness: she found a treasure, that the love of God. To acquire this wealth she renounces all, it implements all its energy. Another thought: think today with gratitude to our grandmothers. We represent them, these sweet and brave women sitting at home, rosary in hand, begging for their children and grandchildren. Immediately after God is our mothers and our grandmothers that we have our faith.
OFFERTORY: Ps. 44. 10
