DAYTONA BEACH — A Palm Coast man disrupted Sunday evening Mass at The Basilica of St. Paul off Ridgewood Avenue, saying he was going to bomb the place of worship, police said.
Brian Harrington, 34, was arrested and charged with false report of a bomb or explosion with a weapon of mass destruction, an arrest report shows.
Harrington, who served time in prison for burglary and theft, was being held Monday in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $2,500 bail, records show.
Daytona Beach police said Harrington showed up at The Basilica of St. Paul, 317 Mullally St., at 6:32 p.m. Sunday during the opening hymn and attempted to block the path of the priest from getting in front of the church and speaking.
Harrington approached the altar and made obscene gestures with both hands at the priest and a cross. As members of the congregation escorted Harrington out, he said “If you call the cops on me, I will come back and (expletive) bomb this church,” police said.
Police found a shirtless Harrington wearing a bandanna on his head pacing in front of the church. He said he was at the church exercising his religion, the arrest report states.
