In light of the grave situation in Iraq, the Holy Father appointed Cardinal Emo.mo Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, His Messenger staff to express his spiritual closeness to the people who suffer and there lllevarles solidarity of the Church.
Fernando Filoni is Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Born April 15, 1946, in the Diocese of Oria in the province of Taranto, Italy. He completed his theological training at Viterbo, in the seminary of Santa Maria della Quercia. He was ordained priest on July 3, 1970 in the church of galatone and then went to Rome, where he studied at the Pontifical Lateran University, obtaining a degree in canon law. He completed his studies majoring in philosophy at the State University La Sapienza and obtaining a bachelor of science and techniques of public opinion, majoring in journalism.
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1981, its first diplomatic assignment Sri Lanka, where he remained three years. Later he was sent to Iran, where he stayed from 1983 to 1985, the year in which he was called to work with the Secretary of State to deal with international organizations. In 1989 he was transferred to Brazil, where he remained until 1992.
It was formally sent to the Philippines but residing in Hong Kong, where the Holy See had opened a study mission to monitor the situation of the Church in China. In 2001 he was elected to the titular see of Volturno, with dignity of archbishop, consecrated by Pope John Paul II in the Vatican Basilica, and appointed apostolic nuncio in Jordan and Iraq.
It was nuncio in Baghdad over the last two years of the regime of Saddam Hussein during the war and the first three years until 2006, Benedict XVI appointed him papal representative in the Philippines. The May 10, 2011, the Pope appointed him prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
