Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle – Mass Propers

St. Bartholomew – August 24

To me Thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honorable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened.

(From the introit of the day’s Mass, Psalm 138: 17)
The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew
Office
We ourselves are fools because of Christ; but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak and you are strong, you are honored, but we are despised. Until that time we both hunger and thirst, we are naked, torn with fists, and we have no fixed abode. We toil, working with our hands; they cursed us, and we bless; we are persecuted, we endure and; blasphemy on us, and we pray; we have become so far as the garbage of the world, and rejected all the filth. It is not to give you the confusion as I write this, but to admonish you as my beloved son. For, had you ten thousand teachers in Christ, you do not have many fathers; it was I who, through the gospel, you have begotten in Christ.
When you are brought before kings and governors, do not think how or what you should say:  You will be given indeed, at that very hour what you will say.
For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
The Apostle Bartholomew was a Galilean. He traveled part of India located below the Ganges, opposed that fate had assigned him, when the apostles had divided the world to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He told these people the coming of the Lord Jesus, in the Gospel according to St. Matthew. After getting many conversions to Christianity in those countries, and supported a lot of work and hardship, he headed for Greater Armenia.
There, he converted to Christianity Polymius king, his queen, and twelve entire cities. This success aroused great jealousy against him by the priests of that nation. They even excite hatred of Astyages, brother of King Polymius, so that the prince ordered Bartholomew flayed alive, and after this cruelty, cut off his head. It was during this ordeal that the Apostle gave up his soul to God.
His body, buried in Albanopoli, City of Greater Armenia and place of his martyrdom was, in later transported first to Lipari and Benevento, and finally to Rome by the Emperor Otto III. He was placed in a church dedicated under her patronage in the Tiber Island. His Day in Rome is the eighth day of the Kalends of September and it is celebrated for eight consecutive days in this basilica, by a large concourse of people.
These are the victors and the friends of God; despising the orders of princes, they deserved eternal reward. * Now they are crowned and receive the prize.

The Liturgical Year by Dom Guéranger, O.S.B.  – St. Bartholomew
A witness of the Son of God, one of the princes who proclaimed his glory among the nations, illuminates date incomparable lights apostolic light. While his brothers of the Sacred College followed the race on all roads where the migration of peoples wore it, it was the starting point of the mountains of Armenia, where the son of Noah filled the earth, Barthelemy appeared as the envoy of the everlasting hills and the herald of the Bridegroom. There had stopped the ark figurative; humanity elsewhere traveler, there sat, remembering the dove olive branch, waiting for the consummation of the alliance with the rainbow sky, shining on the bare, had in these places for first served splendor. Now this is a new Blessed awakened in these high valleys echoes of ancient traditions: new peace, end of sin including universal deluge shrinks the wood of salvation. How serenity qu’apportait dove of old is exceeded! Punishment will succeed love. The ambassador of heaven God showed the son of Adam in the finest of their brethren. The lofty heights from which the rivers that once watered the garden of delights flow, see renew the contract torn into Eden, and celebrate the joy of the earth and the heavens divine wedding, waiting centuries union of the Word and regenerated humanity.
Personally, that was the apostle whose ministry borrows such solemnity of where it takes place? Under the name or nickname of Bartholomew, which is the only feature that we have kept him in the first three Gospels, do we see, as many have thought, what with the presentation by Nathaniel Philip to Jesus St. John the object of such a sweet scene? People all righteousness, innocence, simplicity, worthy of having the dove precursor, and for which we feel that the God-Man from the first reserved tenderness and grace of choice.
Whatever it may be, the part expired between twelve elected to this day says enough the special confidence of the divine Heart; the heroism of martyrdom formidable when he sealed his apostolate, reveals his fidelity; Dignity has kept all latitudes where she lives transplanted the nation he grafted on Christ, demonstrates the excellence of the sap originally brewed in its branches. When, two centuries later, Gregory the Illuminator was germinate throughout Armenia by the abundance of flowers and fruits which manifested so beautiful, he had only to awaken the divine seed sown by the Apostle and whose tests, which were never to miss the generous country, had a compressed time the rise, unable to stifle.

Why is it that deplorable misunderstanding, fed into the drama of endless invasions, have kept too long in defiance against Rome a race extermination wars, tortures, dispersion, could not detach from the love of Christ the Savior! Thankfully though, the return movement, more than once and then started to slow down, now seems to be more accentuated; illustrated nation sees his chosen son work with perseverance the approximation if desirable, dispelling prejudices of their people, revealing the treasures of our region if its Christian literature, the magnificence of its liturgy, especially in praying and dedicating themselves under the banner of the father of the monks of the West. With these proponents of true national tradition, ask them Apostle Bartholomew, and the disciple Thaddeus who had also participated in the early evangelization and Ripsima, the heroic leading Roman virgin land thirty-five his companions to conquer a new country, and all the martyrs whose blood cemented the building on the only foundation laid by the Lord. Can, like these great predecessors, the head of the second apostolate, Gregory the Illuminator, who wanted to see Peter in the person of Silvestre and received the blessing of the Roman Pontiff; may the holy kings, patriarchs and teachers of Armenia, she listened to again become beautiful time in its history guides, and bring whole, without returning finally to the one fold, made for a Church walk at the same pace with the Church teacher and mother!
We learn from Eusebius and Jerome, prior to visit Armenia, supreme goal of his apostolate, St. Bartholomew evangelized India, where Pantene in the next century, found a copy of the Gospel of St. Matthew in Hebrew letters he had left there. Dionysius also reports of the glorious Apostle profound speech, he cited and commented as follows: “The divine Bartholomew said of theology that is both abundant and succinct gospel it is wide extent and at the same time concise; giving excellent suggestion that the beneficent cause of all beings and speaks a lot and in a few words, or even without speech, having speech or thought which could make it. Because it is above all by its superior essence; and those only reach it in its truth, not in the sails that work with her, which exceeds the matter and spirit, rising beyond the ridge of the holiest mountains, leaving all the divine radiation, all echoes of God, all the talk of heaven, to enter into the darkness where it lives, as the Scripture says, who is beyond all things “.
Tomorrow is only the City of Rome celebrates the feast of St. Bartholomew; it is in this agree with the Greeks, who belong to 25 August the memory of a translation of the relics of the Apostle. The various translations indeed the holy body, combined with the difficulty of determining the date of the martyrdom of Bartholomew explain the variety of days adopted for this feast by the Churches of the East and the West. The determination of the 24th of this month, established by usage of most Latin Churches, dates back to the earliest martyrologies, including Hieronymian. In the thirteenth century, Innocent III, consulted on the discrepancy, replied that he had to keep this local customs.

Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle / 11th Sunday after Pentecost
Double/2nd Class/ Red   –     Missa “Mihi autem nimis”
In the Gospel of St. John, the Apostle Bartholomew is not mentioned among the Apostles, but it is stated that Philip and Nathaniel came to Jesus, and that Our Lord said of Nathaniel, “the Israelite in whom was no guile.” In the list of the apostles in the other Gospels, Nathaniel is not mentioned, but after Philip is placed Bartholomew. The Redeemer chose all the apostles at once, and formed them from the beginning into a hierarchial group with St. Peter at their head, in order to show us that the rightful priesthood instituted by Christ is that which is derived in unbroken succession from the twelve apostles chosen by Our Savior, and being in communion with the See of Peter, is also in communion with the entire Catholic episcopate.
Bartholomew is said to have preached the faith over a great Part of Asia and suffered martyrdom in Armenia, where he was flayed alive. His body was transferred many times, and now believed to repose in the Church of St. Bartholomew on an island in the Tiber.

GOSPEL:   Luke 6: 12-19
At that time, Jesus went out into a mountain to pray, and He passed the whole night in the prayer of God: and when day was come, He called unto Him His disciples; and He chose twelve of them (whom also He named apostles), Simon whom He surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes, and Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor. And coming down with them, He stood in a plain place, and the company of His disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the seacoast, both of Tyre and Sidon, who were come to hear Him, and to be healed of their diseases.
