Saturday in the eighth week after Pentecost – Feast of St. John Vianney- With a Commemoration Vigil of St. Lawrence and St. Romanus, Martyrs
St John Mary Vianney, Confessor
St. John Mary Vianney was born at Dardilly, France, in 1786. He was a farm-hand until his nineteenth year, when he began his studies for the priesthood. His talents were poor, and his progress slow. He was ordained at Grenoble in 1815; he became parish priest of Ars in 1818. That little town was the scene of his marvelous labors until his holy death, August 4, 1859. He was canonized May 31, 1925, by Pope Plus XI. For forty years his food and sleep were insufficient to sustain human life; during the last ten years of his life he spent from sixteen to eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Enlightened by God, he could read hearts and soften the most hardened sinner. He healed the sick and cast out devils; like his Master he was openly persecuted, calumniated and hated by wicked men. His little parish attracted thousands of people. Towards the end of his life 158,000 people visited Ars in a single year. He founded an orphanage for girls, trusting its support to Divine Providence.
St Lawrence
Dom Gueranger, Liturgical Year
My servant, do not fear; for I am with thee, saith the Lord. If you walk through the fire, the flame will thee fatal and smell will not leave in thee no trace. I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked, I’ll tear you in the hands of strong “. This is the hour of battle where Wisdom, more powerful than fire and flame, called Lawrence to win the laurel victory which his name was even announced.
The three days are finally past the deacon of Sixtus, and also the exile will end; joining the Pontiff at the altar of heaven, he will no longer be separated now. But before enjoying the glorious eternal sacrifice his share by the right of his Order, he must in this land, which lay in the passage of time the seeds of the immutable eternity, he justifies valiant loyalty befitting the Levite of the eternal law of love.
Lawrence is ready. “Experience the minister to whom you have entrusted the dispensation of the blood of the Lord.” It was his turn to Sixtus II. As recommended by the Pontiff, he distributed to the poor the treasures of the Church; this morning, twice the sacred liturgy the notes in his songs. But he knows that deliver all the substance of his house for love, it was not giving anything worthwhile, and he aspires to indulge himself. In the joy of his overflowing generosity, he welcomes the holocaust that appears to raise the already feels smooth and strong perfume. So he can sing the offertory of the Mass of Vigil celebrates his loyalty, hope and his own oblation addressing the arena: “My prayer is pure, and that’s why I ask my voice to be heard in sky; because there is my judge, my witness is in the heights of heaven that my plea rise to God “.
Please sublime, whose accents indeed penetrate the cloud! Now we can say with the Church, his race shall be mighty upon earth, this breed of new Christians born of the blood of martyr. For in the person of Roman, the neophyte earned his first torments and that precedes the sky, we welcome today’s wealthy beginnings. Meet, as the Church does, the soldier and the deacon in our prayer.
St. Romanus
Romanus was a Roman soldier. He was converted to the Christian faith by the preaching of St. Lawrence, and was beheaded the day preceding that of the saint’s martyrdom.
Saint Romanus was a soldier in the legion of Emperor Valerian in Rome, at the time of the arraignment and interrogation of Saint Lawrence. Seeing the joy and constancy and the absolute silence of that holy martyr during his first torments, he could not understand how a creature of flesh and blood could be thus tormented without opening his mouth to complain. He was moved to embrace the Faith, and at that very moment, he beheld beside the Saint a young man of incomparable grace and beauty, who was wiping away the perspiration of the martyr’s face and the blood of his wounds. Addressing himself to Saint Lawrence, still on the rack, he asked to become a Christian. The Saint was untied and imprisoned, and later was able to respond to the pressing request of the soldier, who brought him in prison the water for his baptism.
Saint Romanus was summoned before the tribunal, for everyone soon learned of his conversion. He said fearlessly and joyfully, there as he had said elsewhere, I am a Christian! He was condemned and beheaded immediately, the day before the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, on August 9, 258. The body of Saint Romanus was buried by a priest in a cavern on the road to Tibur, but his remains were translated to Lucca, where they are kept under the high altar of a beautiful church which bears his name.

EPISTLE: Ecclus. 45: 1-6
Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. He was beloved of God and men, whose memory is in benediction; He made him like the saints in glory, and magnified him in the fear of his enemies; and with his words he made prodigies to cease; He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and showed him his glory; He sanctified him in his faith and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh; for He heard him and his voice, and brought him into a cloud; and He gave him commandments before his face, and a law of life and instruction
GRADUAL: Psalm 91: 13, 14
The just shall flourish like the palm-tree; he shall grow up like the cedar of Libanus in the house of the Lord. V. (Ps. 91, 3). To show forth Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth in the night. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (James 1: 12) Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been proved, he shall receive the crown of life. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: Luke 12: 35-40
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: ” Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands, and you yourselves like to men, who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when He cometh, shall find watching. Amen, I say to you, that He will gird Himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them. And if He shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open. Be ye then also ready; for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.”
OFFERTORY: Psalm 88: 25
My truth and My mercy shall be with him: and in My name shall his horn be exalted.
