Bergoglio of America: Cardinal Dolan says NYC Archdiocese can use ‘endangered’ churches as future affordable housing!
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Cardinal Timothy Dolan is proposing that the properties of churches slated for closure be considered for use as affordable housing throughout New York City.
Most of the parishes on Staten Island that will be shuttered under the “Making All Things New” pastoral planning initiative are located on the North Shore which already has a glut of low-income housing.
At least a third of the 33 current parishes on Staten Island are being affected by mergers.
The estimated market value of the soon-to-close four churches’ real estate is $27.86 million, according to city Department of Finance calculations for the current 2014-2105 tax year.
“The archdiocese has long been a leader in providing affordable housing, and as part of our on-going discussions with the City of New York, we will now be able to explore several new sites as possible locations for housing,” Cardinal Dolan said in news release last week that announced the closures and mergers of parishes throughout the archdiocese.
“Caring for people with special needs is an ever-increasing ministry, and the archdiocese will look into new and creative ways to accomplish this as well.”
Joseph Zwilling, communications director for the archdiocese, was asked whether sites on Staten Island were being targeted for low-income housing.
“The question of using a site for affordable housing is something that will now be explored, but we do not have plans at this point to use any particular site, nor do we have any decisions on funding sources,” Zwilling said on Tuesday.
“We have indicated to the City our openness to exploring if any sites would make sense as affordable housing sites.”
