Everyone between 21 and 59 years of age is bound to observe the law of fast. All over 7 must abstain from meat on Friday. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed.

Januarius, also known as Januarius I of Benevento, was Bishop of Naples and is a martyr and saint of the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. While no contemporary sources on his life are preserved, later sources state that he died during the Great Persecution which ended with Diocletian's retirement in 305. Januarius is the patron saint of Naples, where the faithful gather three times a year in Naples Cathedral to witness the liquefaction of a sample of his blood kept in a sealed glass ampoule.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts, together with the blessed Seraphim, in triumphant chorus, unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:
