Cop abuses his authority... slipped past officers to stand next to Pope Francis-Bergoglio' visit to 9/11!

Cop abusing his authority. Bergoglio fan breaks law to stand close to pope during U.S. visit!

Rogue cop who was not on patrol duty stood mere feet from Pope Francis and refused to move away during U.S. visit!
  • Port Authority union boss Paul Nunziato wasn't on patrol during papal visit
  • But he slipped past officers to stand next to Pope Francis' visit to 9/11
  • The cop defied orders by three of his superior officers to leave the area
  • He also breached the rules for not wearing his cap in 'a military manner'
  • Nunziato says he had a right to be there for PAPD officers who died in 9/11
  • Cop has since been charged with violating department's rules of conduct
A cop who stood guard a few feet away from Pope Francis during his U.S. visit had not been on patrol and refused to leave when ordered, according to disciplinary documents.
Port Authority union boss Paul Nunziato was not on papal patrol during the pope's visit to the 9/11 Memorial during the New York leg of his U.S. tour in September.
But that did not stop the cop slipping past the officers on duty to stand next to the Catholic leader as he prayed with Timothy Cardinal Dolan for those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

When his superiors noticed Nunziato - who was not in proper uniform and had no business on papal patrol - they ordered him to leave.
But the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association (PAPBA) president refused, according to disciplinary papers, seen by the New York Post.

He allegedly defied orders from three separate superior officers and remained in the high security, restricted zone, next to the pope.
Nunziato has since been charged with violating the department's rules of conduct. The department had not yet stated what punishment he could face.

He is also accused of breaking the rule which states that caps should be worn in 'a military manner.' The cop had not been wearing his but had hung it on the side of his gun belt, the papers reveal.
Nunziato claims he had a right to watch the pope bless the names of the victims who died in September 11 as a representative of the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD).
More than half of the 71 police officers who lost their lives when the World Trade Center buildings collapsed in the attacks in 2001 belonged to the department.
The PAPBA president said he was personally asked to attend the event by two widows of officers in his department who died in 9/11 so that the PAPD would get proper recognition alongside the NYPD and Fire Department of New York.
Nunziato, a 28-year veteran who heads the union that represents his 1,300 colleagues, claims that he was simply let through by members of the Secret Service.
'I think I earned the right to stand next to that reflecting pool as the pope blessed it, and anyone who disagrees with that can kiss my ass,' he told The Post
'I had 37 police officers' names on that reflecting pool that the pope was going to bless, and I told them if anyone was going to stand here as he blessed that pool, it was going to be me.

It is not the brash police officer's first brush with controversy. Last year, Nunziato (right) - a good friend of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's (left) former PA David Wildstein - was caught up in the Bridgegate scandal

He added that he had removed his hat - against the department's rules - as a sign of respect to the papal leader.
It is not the brash police officer's first brush with controversy.
Last year, Nunziato - a friend of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's former PA David Wildstein - was caught up in the Bridgegate scandal.
Bridgegate, also known as the Fort Lee lane closure scandal, saw the George Washington Bridge local lanes closed after Fort Lee mayor refused to back Gov. Christie’s re-election bid.
Nunziato was subpoenaed over allegations he had suggested to Wildstein he hold a 'traffic study' at the bridge. He was never charged.
During the latest controversy, Nunziato can be seen in numerous pictures of the pope's visit to the memorial, standing a few feet back as Francis prays over the names.
Pope Francis had delivered an emotional speech at the memorial where he mourned the lives of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks and condemned senseless acts of violence while speaking in the foundations of the former Twin Towers.
When he arrived at Ground Zero, the pope stood at the side of the twin reflecting pools where he spent a few moments with his head bowed in solemn silence. He then laid a white flower, a symbol of innocence and purity, on the side of the fountains which bare the names of the fallen.
Nunziato can be seen standing behind him during the solemn event.

Speaking at an interfaith ceremony at the National September 11 museum, the pope said he felt 'moved' by his visit to Ground Zer.
'You can feel the pain here. It's palpable,' he said.
He also spoke about the fountains above the museum, saying the water is symbolic of the tears of the victims.
The religious leader had also met with some of the families of those who had lost their loved ones in the tragedy.
About 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York as well as in Washington, DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The number includes 71 police officers - 37 of those PAPD officers - who were killed while responding to the attack on the towers which then collapsed.
Eighteen relatives of people who died in the attacks were among the 400 invited to hear the pope's remarks.

Scandal at the Vatican: Francesca Chaouqui ready to seek Italian refugee status!

Accused of being at the center of the leak by the Holy See, rejects the accusations and questions the lack of authorization to be able to entrust her defense lawyer Bongiorno.

The process for inquiry that has shocked the Vatican between leaks and confidential documents that were passed out. Meanwhile, the Calabrian Francesca Immaculate Chaouqui is unleashed on Facebook with a post that smacks of protest against the rules of the Holy See. But the turning point in the process arrive in the evening, when the lawyer Giulia Bongiorno announces the hypothesis that Chaouqui may declare a political refugee in Italy.

The day had opened with the words of the Calabrian "A few hours to the process. Please - Chaouqui writes - and I wonder why Jesus I going to have this test. "In her message, Chaouqui reminded of being pregnant and that her lawyer, Giulia Bongiorno, has not been admitted as her lawyer for the defense: "We will be in six tomorrow. There is a mini accused of 17 mm that will go with her mother in the courtroom without her trusted lawyer Giulia Bongiorno who had chosen not to appoint a criminal trial - says - but the soul of a Christian to the Pope He would give life and who is now accused of betraying him. I had done not only because the lawyer Giulia is more good in Italy, but for humanity, the strength, the courage of this woman. One of those people with whom you tackle the storms. A holding the straight bar always. Loyal, strong, yet sweet. A giant like I always say. "

In the hearing today claimed Chaouqui, "I resubmit the request to have my lawyer at my side in this test, if not welcome the Vatican stain of the crime of me denied in a process vital the only person I wanted with me. "
There are five indictments at the end of the survey: In addition to Chaouqui, Monsignor Lucio Vallejo Balda, his collaborator Nicola Maio, and journalists Gianluigi Nuzzi and Emiliano Fittipaldi, authors respectively of the books 'Via Crucis' and 'Greed', which It gave rise to the investigation.
In a second post, where Chaouqui appears in a photo with some of the people involved in the investigation and Pope Francis, he adds: "We had to change everything. And instead? I believed in that group more than anywhere else. And instead?".
In the courtroom, they are all of the forum Vatican five lawyers assisting many defendants in the investigation Vatileaks 2, but on the ability of the accused to be represented by legal advisors will decide the President of the Court of Appeal.
This was established by the President of the Court Vatican Giuseppe Dalla Torre, during the first hearing that was held this morning at the Vatican. The decision, therefore, will take place in the coming days as the judge who has to decide is on the move.
In detail, Msgr. Vallejo Bala is represented by the lawyer's office, Emanuela Bellardini but the priest, found in the cell of the Vatican Gendarmerie, has asked to have, in addition to a legal advisor. Same request made
by journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, represented by Roberto Palombini. Francesca Immaculate Chaouqui is defended by Agnes Camilli, Nicola Maio, a former collaborator of the Balda Cosea, it is defended by Rita Claudia Baffioni.
The breakthrough announced, however, Advocate Bongiorno change the cards on the table, with the same legal highlighted: "After the innumerable compression of the right of defense, my assisted Francesca Chaouqui is considering to abstain from participating in the proceedings in the Vatican, invoking his "status" of refuge in Italian territory pursuant to art. 22 of the Treaty of 1929 with the Holy See, also being blamed for political offenses. "
"I note - adds the lawyer Bongiorno - that the Vatican authorities have inexplicably rejected, for the second time, my request for defensive assistance (as in the past for other cases I had been granted); I add that my client has not had the opportunity to examine fully the alleged evidence against, essendole was only allowed to give a brief reading to court papers directly at the hearing. They are, however, she emerged 'ictu oculi a series of imaginative slander in relation to what has already filed a complaint-complaint against Mons. Balda. "
"I note with amazement - says Giulia Bongiorno - that all this is happening while Francesca Chaouqui lies in the delicate personal situation of a high-risk pregnancy, which caused her to go to the hospital several times."
"In this context, nothing short of surreal - he continues - were put at risk not only the right to information and the right to defense, but even the most basic human rights (in and out of the criminal trial)."
"As an Italian citizen - says the lawyer - my assistance will address, therefore, a formal request for help to the authorities listed below: President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice of the High Representative ' Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Commission Vice-President, Commissioner for Human Rights, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Rome. Novus Ordo Missae – I

God has worked miracles with the N.O. Mass?
That’s what the evidence suggests. Alas?

“Facts are stubborn things,” is a famous quote of the United States’ second President, John Adams (1735–1826), “and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” Concerning the New Order of Mass imposed upon the entire Latin Rite Church by Paul VI in 1969, there are some stubborn facts, apt to perturb the “wishes and inclinations” of Catholics cleaving to Catholic Tradition. Let successive issues of these “Comments” first of all present some of these facts; secondly let us see how they may be explained in view of the disastrous role played over the last 46 years by the NOM in helping Catholics to lose the Faith, and thirdly let us deliberate as to what conclusions a wise Catholic needs to draw. First of all, some facts:—
On august 18, 1996, in St Mary’s parish church in the centre of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Fr Alejandro Pezet was finishing distributing communion (of a new Mass, for sure) when a woman told him of a discarded host at the back of the church. A parishioner having received communion in the hand must have dropped it on their way out of church and abandoned it as being too dirty to be consumed off the floor. Fr Pezet picked it up, put it correctly in a vase of water and placed it in the tabernacle where in a few days it would normally dissolve and could be properly disposed of. However, when on August 26 he opened the tabernacle, what was his surprise to find that the host had turned into a bloody substance. Photographs taken on Bishop Bergoglio’s orders 11 days later showed that it had significantly increased in size. For three years it was kept under strict secret in the tabernacle, but in 1999 then Archbishop Bergoglio decided to carry out a scientific analysis. On October 15, 1999, in the presence of witnesses he allowed Dr Ricardo Castañon, a neuro-psycho physiologist approved of by Rome, to take a sample for testing.
Dr Castañon took the sample firstly to a forensic laboratory in San Francisco which recognized human ADN. A Dr Robert Lawrence located white globules. A Dr. Ardonidoli in Italy thought it was probably heart tissue. An Australian Professor, John Walker, recognized muscular tissue with white globules intact.
To remove all doubt Dr Castañon resorted to a renowned cardiologist and forensic pathologist from Columbia University, New York, Dr Federico Zugibe, without telling him where the specimen came from.
Looking down his microscope Dr Zugibe is quoted as having said, “I can tell you exactly what it is. It is part of the muscle found in the wall of the heart’s left ventricle which makes the heart beat and gives the body its life. Intermingled in the tissue are white blood-cells, which tells me firstly that the heart was alive at the moment when the sample was taken because white blood-cells die outside of a living organism, and secondly that white cells go to the aid of an injury, so this heart has suffered. This is the sort of thing I see in patients who have been beaten about the chest.” When asked how long these cells would have remained alive had they come from a sample kept in water, Dr Zugibe replied that they would have ceased to exist in a matter of minutes.
When in June of 1976 Archbishop Lefebvre was on the brink of ordaining the first large batch of SSPX priests despite Rome’s disapproval, a Roman official came to promise him the end of all problems with Rome if only he would celebrate one NOM. On principle, for doctrinal reasons, he refused. Then how can Almighty God have worked Eucharistic miracles with and for this new Mass? Read here next week a suggested answer.
Kyrie eleison.

Bergoglio says he's 'scared of rigid, fundamentalist' priests!

Pope Francis says he's 'scared of rigid, fundamentalist' priests because 'they bite!!'

Lukewarm and anti-Catholic clergy within, is to be feared because they lead many souls into HELL!! If Bergoglio had any love for God and the faithful he would be more concerned about weeding out the sodomite and pedophile priests!

Pope Francis says that overly pious priests scare him, and he tries to stay clear of them as much as possible!!

According to Raw Story, the well-loved pope said on Friday during a conference on training for the priesthood that he is instinctively suspicious of priests who are hypocritical of their own religiousness.
"I will tell you sincerely, I'm scared of rigid priests," the 78-year-old pope jokingly said. "I keep away from them. They bite!"
Pope Francis used humour to convey his message concerning a serious matter. A lot of unstable individuals seek out a clerical career, he explained, and unless they are weeded out properly by the church, the faithful will suffer.
This is why the pope strongly suggests that seminaries should always assess not just the spiritual state of candidates but also their physical and psychological condition. "There are often young men who are psychologically unstable without knowing it and who look for strong structures to support them. For some it is the police or the army but for others it is the clergy," the pope said.
He warned that these disorders only manifest at a later date, so it will not be easy to spot it from the get-go.
However, the pope said he personally finds it worrisome when a priest takes pride in being extremely devout.
"When a youngster is too rigid, too fundamentalist, I don't feel confident (about him). Behind it there is something he himself does not understand. Keep your eyes open!"

"If you are sick, if you are neurotic, go and see a doctor, spiritual or physical," Pope Francis then suggested to those who might be unfit to join the church. "The doctor will give you pills. But, please, don't let the faithful pay for neurotic priests."

Dogged Infidels

When Europe had the faith, it could defeat The Muslim hordes, but now? – One long retreat.

As the faltering remains of Christendom face today a Muslim invasion organized by the millennial enemies of God, and made possible by the Western nations’ wretched politicians and vile media, it is well to remember how often in times past Christendom was threatened by Muslim invasions, and how Christendom then defended itself, by turning to God. In the summer of 1683, a huge Muslim army of anything from 150 to 300 thousand soldiers besieged Vienna and threatened to engulf Europe from the south-east. The Muslims even envisaged capturing Rome, for the glory of Islam.
With the help of a saintly Capuchin, Fr. Marco da Aviano, Pope Innocent XI succeeded in putting together a Christian army from several European nations to relieve Vienna. Here is the prayer of the Capuchin just before the battle:
“O Lord God of Hosts, Behold us prostrate at the feet of your Majesty, to obtain forgiveness for our sins. Well do we know how we have deserved that the infidels take up arms to oppress us, because the iniquities committed by us every day against your goodness have justly provoked your wrath. O great God, from the depth of our hearts we ask you to forgive us; we execrate sin because you abhor it; it pains us that we have often angered your supreme goodness. For love of you we would rather die a thousand times than commit the least act to displease you. Come to our aid, O Lord, with your grace, and let not your servants break the pact which we have made with you alone. Have pity upon us, have pity on your Church, which the fury and strength of the infidels are even now preparing to oppress. Even if it is by our own fault that they have broken in on the serenity of these Christian countries, and even if all the ills coming upon us are none other than the consequence of our own wickedness, still be propitious towards us, O God of all goodness, and despise not the work of you r own hands. Remember how, to save us from the slavery of Satan, you shed all of your Precious Blood.
“Will you allow it to be trodden underfoot by these dogs? Can it be that you will permit the precious pearl of the faith, which you sought out with such zeal and rescued with so much suffering, to be thrown to these swine to be trampled on? Forget not, O Lord, that if you allow the infidels to prevail over us, they will blaspheme your holy Name and mock your power, crying out a thousand times, “Where is their God, the God who was powerless to save them from our hands?” Let it not be held against you, O Lord, that you gave way to the fury of the wolves, just when we were calling upon you in our misery and anguish. Great God of battles, come to our aid! If you favour our cause, the armies of the infidels cannot harm us. Scatter these people that have wanted war! For our part, we ask no more than to be at peace with you, with ourselves and with our neighbour . . .”
The prayer continues with the request for the Christian army’s leaders and soldiers to be strengthened with God’s grace, with the spirit and courage of the heroes of the Old Testament, so that they may reduce to naught the enemies of the Christian name, and show forth God’s power. Let God look down on the Christian soldiers’ faith, hope and charity. On His behalf Marco will bless them on their way to battle. Let God hold back the arm of his wrath raised over them, and let His enemies know that there is no other God beside Him. Like Moses, Marco will lift his arms to bless the Christian soldiers. May God grant them victory, and the ruin of His and their enemies, Amen.
How politically incorrect! “Dogs” and “swine” – How racist! Intolerable! But the fact is that God granted to the Christians a sensational victory which threw back the Muslims for 300 years. Now they are back. And this time there is virtually no repentance left to call upon Almighty God . . .
Kyrie eleison.

Vatican II Uprooted
A God diminished, emptied out, cut down, Will not appeal.
Christ must regain his crown.
I have just been re-reading Michael Davies’ Pope John’s Council, written in 1977 and hardly needing to be up-dated nearly 40 years later. If anything, Michael Davies was too kind to the Council, but there are many home truths in the book, so that it can be warmly recommended to anybody beginning to study the Council. Especially interesting is the Appendix VI consisting of a review by Professor Louis Salleron from 1936 of the French philosopher Jacques Maritain’s (1882–1973) then recently appeared book, Integral Humanism. This book so interested an Italian priest, Giovanni-Battista Montini, that he translated it into Italian. Later he became Pope Paul VI, the main architect of Vatican II. Thus Salleron uncovers the roots of the Council, 26 years before it began.
Integral Humanism presents Maritain’s vision of a new future for a remodeled Christendom. Bourgeois civilisation is doomed, but instead of the Church continually condemning the man-centered humanism which gave rise to the French Revolution (1789) which gave rise to that bourgeoisie, the Revolution needs to be recognised as part of an on-going and inevitable historical process with which Christianity can and must come to terms. By this means, while the whole course of modern history cannot be stopped, nevertheless by Christ the humanism can be made truly, fully human, becoming “integral humanism.” Christianity thus rebuilt on modern foundations will bring Christ to modern man and modern man to Christ, the admirable intention of Maritain and Paul VI and Bishop Fellay.
But “the way to Hell is paved with good intentions,” says the wise old proverb. Salleron admires all kinds of things in the book of Maritain, who was a philosopher skilled in Thomism and knew well, says Salleron, how to present any idea in such a way as not to contradict Catholic doctrine. But Salleron objects strongly to Maritain’s reading of modern history and calls it “Marxist.” Karl Marx (1818–1883) also started out from the rot of bourgeois civilization but concluded that it must be completely torn down by on-going Revolution to make way for the dream of the classless society, which worked out in reality as the nightmare of Communism. So Maritain rejected Marx’ conclusion but accepted his analysis of history, so as to fashion a new compromise Christianity that would work for modern man: neither modernity on modern foundations (Marx – and Wagner), nor Christ on Christ’s foundations (Pius X – see especially his Letter on the Sillon – and Archbishop Lefebvre), but Christ on modern foundations. The result is that Newchristianity which is to be found throughout the documents of Vatican II, namely Christ is the true fulfillment of man – not man is ordered to Christ and to God, but God and Christ are ordered to man.
Alas, compromise solutions do not work with Our Lord. He says, “Let your speech be yes, yes or no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil” (Mt. V, 37). And “He that is not with me, is against me” (Mt. XII, 30). A man-centred religion of the true God is a contradiction in terms. Salleron points out that there is nothing inevitable in the march of modern history such as Marx and Maritain imagined. If modern man is going to the Devil, it is by man’s own free choice. What liberals like Maritain and Paul VI and Bishop Fellay do not grasp is the reality of evil. They do not grasp that modern man simply does not want Christ, and God will not force man to do so. Liberals will diminish God so as to make him appealing to modern man, but most modern men will turn away, in indifference or disgust. Vatican II has been a colossal failure, and “integral humanism” has been just one more example of disintegrating humanism, because it is not centered on God.
Politics, economics, the banks, finance, the arts, medicine, law, agriculture, the whole of modern society must come back under the Social Kingship of Christ the King. That was Archbishop Lefebvre’s solution. It is the only solution.
Kyrie eleison.

French priest smashes statue of Jesus!!!

From the Great St. Alphonsus Liguori, on blasphemy

”Nothing,” says the holy doctor,”is more horrible than blasphemy; for every sin, compared with blasphemy, is small.” And here it is necessary to observe, that blasphemies against the saints, against holy things or holidays such as the sacraments, the Mass, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, Holy Saturday are of the same species as blasphemies against God; for St. Thomas teaches, that, as the honour paid to the saints, to holy things, and holidays, is referred to God, so an insult offered to the saints is injurious to God, who is the foundation of sanctity.
Thus, from the works of St. Jerome we may infer, that blasphemy is more grievous than theft, than adultery, or murder. All other sins, says St. Bernardine proceeds from frailty or ignorance; but the sin of blasphemy proceeds from malice. For it proceeds from a bad will, and from a certain hatred conceived against God.
To the malice of blasphemy is added the malice of scandal, which generally accompanies blasphemy; for this sin is ordinarily committed externally and in presence of others.
Woe to blasphemers, eternal woe to them: for, according to Tobias, they shall be condemned. ”They shall be condemned that blaspheme thee.”

'Stressed' French priest smashes statue of Jesus!!!

A French village priest who smashed a statue of Jesus in his church has blamed the stress and fatigue of his job for an act which shocked his congregation.

Jean-Jacques Le Roy, 55, a priest in Plestin-les-Greves in Brittany, shouted out "one less!" as he threw the statue to the ground last Thursday during a visit by a sacred art commission.

Vicar-general Gerard Nicole said Le Roy did not like the style of sculpture and local media said he had previously smashed a religious statue in front of a future married couple.
However Le Roy said his act was not deliberate but that he had pushed the statue too hard while checking if it was properly attached to a wall.

"In our ministry, we are called upon from all directions, there aren't many priests, there is a certain fatigue, irritation, stress, it all came together at that moment," he told AFP.
He apologized to those present, but his congregation wrote a letter to the bishop to complain.

"We can understand that people are shocked," said Nicole. "I don't rule out a moment of difficulty, of distress."
Nicole said that Le Roy had been summoned to explain himself to the local bishop.

Vatican leaks scandal grows after new book exposes resistance and waste!

         Scandal at the Vatican...

A new book, seen by Associated Press, recounts the mismanagement within the Vatican and efforts to thwart Pope Francis' reforms

The Vatican's new leaks scandal intensified on Tuesday as a book detailed the mismanagement and internal resistance that has been thwarting Pope Francis' financial reform efforts.
Citing confidential documents, it exposed millions of pounds in potential lost rental revenue, the scandal of the Vatican's saint-making machine, greedy monsignors and a professional-style break-in at the Vatican.
Merchants in the Temple, by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi is due out on Thursday but an advance copy was obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. Its publication, and that of a second book, come days after the Vatican arrested two people involved with the Pope's financial reform commission in an investigation into stolen documents.
The Vatican on Monday described the books as "fruit of a grave betrayal of the trust given by the pope, and, as far as the authors go, of an operation to take advantage of a gravely illicit act of handing over confidential documentation."
"Publications of this nature do not help in any way to establish clarity and truth, but rather generate confusion and partial and tendentious conclusions," the Vatican said.
The books mark a new phase in the so-called Vatileaks scandal. The saga began in 2012 with an earlier Nuzzi expose, peaked with the conviction of Pope Benedict XVI's butler on charges he supplied Nuzzi with stolen documents, and ended a year later when a clearly exhausted Benedict XVI resigned, unable to carry on.
With the scandal still fresh, the pope was elected in 2013 on a mandate from his fellow cardinals to reform the Vatican bureaucracy and clean up its opaque finances. He set out promptly by creating a commission of eight experts to gather information from all Vatican offices on the Holy See's overall financial situation, which by that time was dire.
Monsignor Lucio Angel Vallejo Balda, a high-ranking Vatican official affiliated with the Opus Dei movement, and Francesca Chaouqui, an Italian public relations executive, were both members – and now are accused in the leaks investigation.
The monsignor has yet to comment but Chaouqui wrote on Twitter: "I am not a poison-pen letter writer, I have never betrayed the Pope. I never gave a document to anyone. Never to anyone."
Nuzzi's book focuses on the work of the commission and the resistance it encountered in getting information out of Vatican departments that have long enjoyed near-complete autonomy in budgeting, hiring and spending.
"Holy Father, ... There is a complete absence of transparency in the book-keeping both of the Holy See and the Governorate," five international auditors wrote the pope in June 2013, according to Nuzzi's book. "Costs are out of control. This applies in particular to personnel costs, but it also extends elsewhere."
Citing emails, minutes of meetings, recorded private conversations and memos, the book paints a picture of a Vatican bureaucracy entrenched in a culture of mismanagement, waste and secrecy.
It might not be far off the mark given that the pope has repeatedly and publicly warned the Roman Curia against engaging in "intrigue, gossip, cliques, favoritism and partiality" and acting more like a royal court than an institution of service.
Last Christmas he delivered an infamous dressing down of his closest collaborators, citing the "15 ailments of the Curia" that included living "hypocritical" double lives and suffering from "spiritual Alzheimer's".
That said, the book is clearly written from the point of view of the commission members, sympathetic to their plight and setting up an "us against them" narrative of the new reformers battling the Vatican's entrenched Old Guard, without addressing why the Old Guard might have had reason to distrust them.
The book cites a memo listing six priorities when the commission began work, starting with the need to get a handle on the Vatican's vast real estate holdings. Nuzzi cites a commission report that found that the value of the real estate was some €2.7 billion (£1.9 billion), seven times higher than the amount entered onto the balance sheets.
Rents were sometimes 30 to 100 per cent below market, the commission found, including some apartments that were given free to cardinals and bureaucrats as part of their overall compensation or retirement packages.
The book says that if market rates were applied, homes given to employees would generate income of €19.4 million rather than the €6.2 million currently recorded, while other "institutional" buildings which today generate no income would generate income of €30.4 million.

The second priority on the commission's list was to get a handle on the management of bank accounts for the Vatican's "postulators", the officials who spearhead candidates for sainthood. The process – which involves painstaking research into the "heroic" deeds of saintly candidates and the search for miracle cures – has always been steeped in secrecy.
Nuzzi estimates that the average price tag for a single cause is around €500,000 and has gone as high as €750,000 for one beatification. Funding comes from donors eager to see their candidate honoured. Causes that inspire wealthy donors get lots of funding, poorer causes get little – and often get stalled as a result.
After the Vatican's saint-making office told the commission it had no documentation about the postulators' funding or bank accounts, the commission had the postulators' accounts frozen at the Vatican bank, Nuzzi said.
In an indication of the controversy that the commission's work engendered, Nuzzi recounts a previously little-known incident: the March 30, 2014 break-in at the commission's offices and theft of commission documents. The burglary may well have been an inside job, as the thieves appeared to know exactly which locker to target to get the documents.
"The action should be understood as a warning to those who were carrying
out the most delicate inquiries; to those who were offering the pontiff the tools for revolutionizing the Curia," Nuzzi concluded.
Finally, Nuzzi recounts the tale of Monsignor Giuseppe Sciacca, the number two in the Vatican City State administration, who wanted a fancier apartment. Top-ranking Vatican cardinals often enjoy enormous apartments, with some commanding upward of 400 square metres apiece.
When Sciacca's neighbour, an elderly priest, was admitted to hospital for a long period, Sciacca took advantage of the absence to break through a wall separating their flats and incorporated an extra room into his apartment, furniture and all, Nuzzi recounts.
The elderly prelate eventually came home to find his things in boxes, and died a short time later.

The pope, who lives in a hotel room, summarily demoted Sciacca, forcing him to move out. Sciacca did not comment on the claims.
