New Generation of Nuns Favor Tradition and Thrive

The Sisters of Life is attracting young women while older more "modern" orders are dying out...

Movies such as The Sound of MusicThe Blues Brothers and Sister Actevidence the intrigue surrounding the life of a nun.  Nuns in their 30s aren’t as common as they once were so the average person isn't as likely to come into contact with one. In fact, according to Pew Research Center data the numbers of religious in America has declined dramatically since the 1960’s. However, they are on the increase again in some places such as the United Kingdom, with the most attractive institutes interestingly being the more traditional orders, such as those who follow traditional prayer routines and still wear habits.

This week The Wall Street Journal published insights into the life of 30-year-old Sister Bethany Madonna together with seven other Sisters of Life also in their 30s. Based in New York, the Sisters of Life is a reasonably new order established in 1991 by New York Cardinal John O’Connor. Since then, it has thrived.  The impetus for the order came when Cardinal O’Connor visited Dachau, the site of a Nazi death camp. It moved him to start a religious community of women with a fourth vow to protect the sacredness of every human life, in addition to the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Canonically speaking, they are sisters and not nuns, working in the community as they do, rather than living a contemplative life, though they do spend at least four hours in prayer every day.

Earlier this year, the New York Post expressed concern at the city’s declining birth rate and the plight of New York families.  A significant number of births are from the city’s poorest neighborhoods — nearly 6 in 10 moms were on Medicaid or government-financed health insurance for the needy:

The city’s birth rate is the lowest since 1936 — having steadily declined over the past decade, according to data obtained by The Post. “This is a very troubling trend,” said Conservative Party state chairman Mike Long. “The economy is hurting families and the development of families … If we don’t produce enough young people, society won’t be able to pay for Social Security and Medicaid,” he warned.

Blacks had the lowest birth rate citywide, with 12.7 per 1,000 — and more black women are having abortions than babies, at a rate of 55 percent.  “When the abortion ratio reaches nearly 60 percent in some communities, we as community leaders need to examine the choices we are making as we educate our young people,” the New York Metropolitan Clergy for Better Choices said.

As its fertility rate declines and more pregnant mothers struggle, one of the things the Sisters of Life concentrate on is helping pregnant women. This includes welcoming pregnant women in crisis to live among them as guests and practically assisting pregnant women in other ways.

As eight young women dressed in blue habits and long white veils prepared to offer their final vows as members of the Sisters of Life this month, the Wall Street Journal asked “What could lead a personable young woman from a happy family to give up everything -- especially at a moment when women have never had as many opportunities before them?”.  Eight years of life already within the community have culminated in this day’s decision so it isn’t one made lightly. Journalist, William McGurn, writes:

These are happy, excited women. What is it they believe they have found? Sister Bethany says it’s the “peace in your heart” that comes from knowing you are where you are meant to be. In this case it’s a place so countercultural, it’s almost un-American. For in a nation founded upon the God-given right to the pursuit of happiness, these sisters vow to put the happiness of others before their own … “After eight years,” she says with a smile, “you know if this is the life for you.”

… It is precisely the abandonment of self to Christ that sustains these women in those moments when perhaps they’d rather not obey, when they might prefer not to get out of bed in the middle of the night to help a pregnant mother who is throwing up in the next room …

Perhaps some of the babies they help will one day add to their numbers.

They were scraping the brain out of a baby while his heart was still beating.

That's the newest revelation in the series of videos about Planned Parenthood's evil abortion factory.

This Saturday, August 22nd, thousands across the nation are gathering in front of Planned Parenthood abortion facilities to protest the horrific harvesting and selling of aborted baby parts.

At the end of World War II, General George S. Patton marched local citizens through the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald. We cannot wait to be forced to see the horrors taking place in our own neighborhoods. WE HAVE A CHANCE TO FIGHT THIS HIDDEN HOLOCAUST HERE AND NOW!

Join us this Saturday and stand firm against an industry that views children the way a butcher views cuts of beef.

Entertainer’s Alchemy

To think that two and two are four,
And neither five nor three,
The heart of man has long been sore,
And long ‘tis like to be.
              —A.E. Housman (1859–1936)
A reader of these “Comments” forwarded to me in May a video-clip from the Internet (to be found here) which she said was then circulating widely on Facebook and was having “a massive influence on people.” The clip presents a well-known black American entertainer, Will Smith, being interviewed on “Progressive Thought Patterns,” which is a pompous title for a pile of nonsense. But then who ever resorted to Facebook or to icons of entertainment to hear sense? The interest lies for Catholics in seeing how the exact same Kantian nonsense that has overwhelmed the Church (see Pascendi, as the key to Vatican II) is also fermenting at street level amongst ordinary people without the least knowledge of Kant or of Pascendi. Here is what Will Smith says to his interviewer (with a few comments inserted in italics):—
“I don’t wanna’ (want to) be an icon (which he certainly is, as having been highly successful in Hollywood), I wanna’ be an idea. You know, I wanna’ represent an idea. I wanna’ represent possibilities. I wanna’ represent magic, right, that you’re in a universe, and two plus two equals four. Two plus two equals four only if you accept that two plus two equals four. Two plus two is gonna’ be what I want it to be, you know, and there’s a redemptive (note that word – so what is Redemption?) power that making a choice has, you know, like feeling you’re an effect (perhaps he means “cause”) to all things that are happening. Make a choice, like you just decide what is gonna’ be, who you’re gonna’ be, how you’re gonna’ do it. Just decide, and then from that point the universe is gonna’ get outa’ your way. It’s water, it wants to move and go around, and stuff, you know, so for me I wanna’ represent possibilities. I wanna represent th e idea that you really can make what you want.
“One of my favourite books is The Alchemist by Paul Coelho, and I just believe that. I believe that I can create whatever I wanna’ create. If I can put my head to it, study it and learn the patterns ( . . . ), I feel very strongly that we are who we choose to be. I consider myself an alchemist. An alchemist is basically a mystical chemist, right, and one of the great feats that alchemists used to do is that they would take lead, take a chunk of lead, and make it turn from lead into gold. So I connect it(my idea, presumably) symbolically to being able to turn lead into gold. My grandmother used to say, ‘Life give you a lemon, you go ahead and make lemonade’ (that of course is good old-fashioned common sense, two generations back. But for Will Smith –) To me that’s alchemy. That’s the same concept behind The Alchemist.”
All the above is a close reproduction of Will Smith’ s own words, not in order to make fun of him, but in order to show Kant at work amongst ordinary people who are far from being readers of Kant.
Notice that Will Smith is not completely devoid of common sense. If the word “alchemy” really means making lemonade out of lemons, then it respects reality. But if the word stands for making gold out of lead, as it often does, then it stands for a dream which has been dreamt down the ages and represents escaping from reality, or, worse, the refusal of natural reality and even a resorting to devils for a preternatural bending of it.
Now Will Smith is an entertainer, and his video-clip is quite entertaining, so nothing obliges us to take too seriously anything he says. But just recently a professional mathematician, one who is at the top of his profession, told me what scorn for objective reality he observes amongst his colleagues. The real problem goes way beyond mere entertainment.

Philadelphia archdiocese cancels LGBT program ahead of Pope Francis visit!

Philadelphia archdiocese cancels LGBT program ahead of Pope Francis visit

The Philadelphia Archdiocese has ordered a local parish hosting events for gay and transgender Catholics during Pope Francis’ U.S. tour next month to cancel the program, organizers said on Tuesday.
Workshops and other discussions around lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues were scheduled to be held at St. John the Evangelist Church on Sept. 26, the day the pope arrives in Philadelphia for a two-day visit.
Pope Francis will attend a summit on families being held in the city, and LGBT Catholic groups have asked for an official presence at the gatherings to express their view that gays and lesbians should be more included in the Church.
Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput has said he would allow the presence of openly gay and transgender Catholics at the World Meeting of Families but did not want the groups to lobby for their issues during the event.
Last week, St. John officials told organizers of the LGBT program they were directed by the archdiocese not to hold the event at their parish, organizers said. The LGBT program was not part of the families summit.
“This is yet another instance of the kind of exclusion LGBT Catholics and supporters have endured for decades,” the Equally Blessed Coalition, a gay Catholic coalition and coordinator of the event, said in a statement.
An archdiocese spokesman said parishes decide which programs to offer but it is expected that they have content in line with the Church’s teachings.
“In this case, the Archdiocese was asked to evaluate the program and provide guidance, which it did,” spokesman Kenneth Gavin said. He said the decision was made locally by the parish.
The program’s centerpiece, a workshop about gender identity, will likely take place at a nearby Methodist church, said Francis DeBernardo, workshop organizer and director of LGBT Catholic advocacy group New Ways Ministry.
“The workshop fills a void at the World Meeting of Families,” DeBernardo said in a statement. “No speakers at the World Meeting will address the topic of gender identity, yet this is an issue that is being faced by more and more Catholic families and communities in the U.S.”
The archbishop saw a brochure for the event and a member of his office phoned St. John pastor Father John Daya to say that he did not want it to take place, DeBernardo said. DeBernardo said he was not told why the archbishop wanted the events canceled.

BERGOGLIO: NOW IN CHEESE FORM

Bergoglio cheese will be available from Pastifico in mid-September.

THE BIG CHEESE of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, soon will be available in mozzarella, thanks to South Philly's Pastificio Homemade Pasta Co., which is preparing blocks of cheese in the shape of Pope Francis in advance of his visit next month to Philadelphia.

"There's no doubt about it, it's definitely cheesy," said Anthony Messina, co-owner of Pastificio.
According to Messina, the cheese pope will stand about 6-inches tall, weigh a little more than a pound and will sell for $20.

Pastificio, on Packer Avenue near 15th Street, is already taking preorders and expects to have the cheese pope on the shelves by the second week of September.
Messina, who co-owns Pastificio with Frank Sangiuliano, said he was inspired to make the fermented Holy Father by Fox 29 reporter Jenn Frederick, who featured the shop and its Santa Claus-shaped cheese at Christmastime.

"We were live on the air and she said, 'I think you should make pope cheese,' " Messina said.

Heeding Frederick's advice, Messina contacted ceramic artist Larry E. Buss, who created the mold for the cheese pope.

"I try to think of myself as a more serious craftsman, I don't ordinarily do kitsch, but he asked me and this was too kitschy not to do," Buss said. "I thought, 'Well, that would be a lark,' so that's why I did it."

An Online Petition to have Bergoglio bless Bradford's knees!

There's a online petition to have Pope Francis bless Bradford's knees...

Unless you've been spending the summer in Hades with all of those Dallas Cowboys fans, you are surely well aware of Pope Francis' impending visit to Philadelphia.
The last weekend in September this fall will certainly be an interesting one. And not just because the Eagles take on the New York Jets.
Philadelphians are going Pope crazy.
The latest example of that is a Change.org petition for Pope Francis to bless the knees of Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford (clearly God forgot about him for the past few seasons).

The petition reads:
The Pope is coming to Philly! Our city! With this Eagles season coming up, a lot of our Super Bowl hopes rely on Sam Bradford's knees staying healthy. So, with one of the most religious representatives in the world visiting our wonderful place we call home, how about we get him to bless Bradford's knees during his visit to Philly! This town deserves a Super Bowl, and a healthy Bradford is the only way we will have a parade down Broad Street! Please sign this petition and Go Eagles and Welcome to Philly, Pope Francis!!!!

Pope Francis Institutes World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation!

Greatest threat to man according to Bergoglio…

Which might explain why he remains silent on the Greatest Evils… Baby slaughtering Planned Barronhood and Sodom Ireland.

The celebration of this day on the same date as the Orthodox Church, the Holy Father stated, will provide a valuable opportunity to bear witness to our growing communion with our Orthodox brothers and sisters.

Because according to Bergoglio Earth has turned into an "immense pile of filth!"

Pope Francis Institutes World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation

Bergoglio's  New Religion...
Pope Francis has instituted a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which will be celebrated each year on September 1st.
Francis made this announcement in a letter he sent to Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, which was published by the Holy See Press Office this morning.
In the letter, the Pope reaffirmed how part of our responsibility as Christians involves resolving the ecological crisis which humanity is presently experiencing. In doing so, he stressed, we must first rediscover in our own "rich spiritual patrimony" the deepest motivations for our concern for the care of creation and how Jesus lived in the world.
Recalling his encyclical on the environment 'Laudato Si,' Francis stressed that the ecological crisis summons us to a 'profound spiritual conversion': "Christians are called to “an ecological conversion whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them.” (ibid., 217)
"The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation will offer individual believers and communities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live," he said.

The celebration of this day on the same date as the Orthodox Church, the Holy Father stated, will provide a valuable opportunity to bear witness to our growing communion with our Orthodox brothers and sisters.
"We live at a time when all Christians are faced with the same decisive challenges, to which we must respond together, in order to be more credible and effective," he said, noting it is his hope that this day will "in some way also involve other Churches and ecclesial Communities, and be celebrated in union with similar initiatives of the World Council of Churches."
Before concluding, Pope Francis invoked upon this initiative the intercession of Mary, Mother of God, and of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose Canticle of the Creatures, he noted, "inspires so many men and women of goodwill to live in praise of the Creator and with respect for creation."

Newchurch of Rot: Transsexual allowed to be the godfather of his nephew!

Bishop bows to trans man...

The bishop allows Alex Salinas to be the godfather of his nephew

The young transsexual received the news of the holder of the parish which was to take place the ceremony after receiving the approval of the bishopric

The Bishop of Cadiz and Ceuta allow Alex Salinas, a young transsexual San Fernando, to be the godfather of his nephew's baptism, as announced him the head of the parish which was to take place the ceremony. Salinas explained that the pastor would announced that he had talked with the Bishop and had taken him to the decision to keep him from being godfather had been a mistake because being transsexual is not an obstacle to be godfather to a church christening. "I'm very happy with what it means for me but, especially because what is true for me is true for other transsexuals who are Catholic and want to be part of the Church, "he explained. Salinas has received the message from the pastor after an intense campaign on social networks and the Internet and, once his sister announced the cancellation of baptism until the young could be the godfather. As he told the godfather future, the pastor has already urged his family to set a date for this celebration, which in principle is expected for the month of September. For its part, the Socialist deputy Carla Antonelli, has welcomed the decision of the diocese and said that "it is wise to rectify and the Church has had time in 2,000 years to learn how to do it." "The Church neither can reject anyone that way because he did not spare faithful and because that decision was not worthy of the word of God because Jesus Christ never conceived this hatred, "he added. Antonelli, has relied on the case of Alex Salinas also serve other transsexuals believers, "you may be transsexual, and being a believer, as can be transsexual and good person or a bad person."
Shown certain that this "historic" decision of the Church helps to strengthen the message. The baptism was intended in the parish of San José Artesano de San Fernando, but Salinas was rejected as godfather for being a transsexual, in a decision the Bishop of Cadiz and Ceuta justified that for their position must lead a life consistent with the provisions of the Church. The spread of this negative led a petition change.org platform for Pope Francisco would receive a Salinas and dealing with the group of transgender equality, an initiative that has so far gathered more than 34,000 signatures.

Authority Limping

The Shepherd is struck, the sheep are all dispersed.
Authority is upside down, reversed.

Good souls regularly wish me to “step up to the plate” and assume a position of authority at the head of today’s “Resistance” movement. Let me propose, without imposing, the reasons for my serious reluctance to attempt any such thing.

Authority in the Church is “shot,” from the top downwards. The present Pope (I am no sedevacantist) is out of his Catholic mind, if ever he had one. But even if his election as Pope was invalid for one reason or another, it was convalidated by his virtually universal acceptance as Pope throughout the worldwide Church. In any case nobody else is Pope, or can be, and therefore he has the supreme authority in the Church. Now the Church was so designed by Our Lord as to be a monarchy, with all authority descending in it through the Pope from God. For by definition authority can only come from above. As Jefferson says in the United States’ Declaration of Independence, authority given from below can always be taken back from below. Authority from below is in fact a contradiction in terms. It is no real authority at all.

Therefore unless this Pope were to give me authority to lead the “Resistance,” which is obviously inconceivable, I will never have official Catholic authority to head up the resistants. Can I have supplied authority due to the emergency? In theory, yes, but supplied authority is relatively weak. It is supplied from above (by the Church) when for instance a penitent asks a priest in unusual circumstances to hear his confession, i.e. when normally the priest would have no jurisdiction to do so. So supplied authority descends from the Church above, but it is triggered only by the demand from below. No demand, no supplied authority.

Take Archbishop Lefebvre’s own case. Firstly, it was very important to him that the Statutes of the original SSPX were officially approved by the diocesan bishop of Geneva, Lausanne and Fribourg . Secondly, for instance, if a priest of the SSPX wanted to quit the SSPX, to right or to left, the Archbishop had no power to stop him or to punish him except by having nothing more to do with him. And if that priest departed towards the Novus Ordo Church, he was often greeted, as one can imagine, with open arms. The SSPX under Bishop Fellay has more and more wanted to be normal and has pretended it is normal, but actually it is a weak structure insofar as it has never had any jurisdiction more than supplied (this is one reason why Bishop Fellay so wants to be re-integrated into the mainstream Church).

Now that was the Archbishop! And I am no Archbishop Lefebvre. Therefore a certain number of good souls can turn to me for guidance, as they do, but it is not in me to claim even a supplied jurisdiction, because of the enormous confusion reigning in the Church. At present I am more and more disinclined to impose even a true viewpoint on anybody, because souls are now so con fused that the least imposition is liable to increase rather than decrease that confusion. “I WILL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD AND THE SHEEP WILL BE SCATTERED” (Zachary XIII, 7), quoted by Our Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mt. XXVI, 31), and that is how it is going to be in the Church, more and more, until God in his mercy restores the Shepherd, which he will do only when mankind will appreciate a true Shepherd of God. Until then God’s gift of such a Shepherd would risk doing more harm than good. So in the meantime we must all take our just punishment: the universal confusion!

That is why I will give to anybody who asks me my reasons for acting as I do, but I will propose those reasons rather than impose them, and I will not usually object to people disagreeing with me.

Kyrie eleison.

Food, Water

Without God man lives badly, and not well.
His “civilization” soon will crash to Hell.

I hate to be a prophet of doom, but what a retired US Government employee with numerous national awards for his services sees coming, and wrote to me, must be told, because I am sure it is the truth.

“The West is hurtling to destruction as it continues to abandon God and His Holy Apostolic Church. My family and I live in a Novus Ordo wasteland. We attend Mass at an SSPX chapel, but we are watching and praying, because the SSPX appears to be reconciled to its absorption and destruction by the modernists. The solution to the problem is the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Our Mother. But right now the Pope has no interest in doing it, nor does the Curia. Our Lord has informed us that the Consecration will be done, but it will be late. I believe this may mean after the beginning of the Chastisement, which will be unlike anything imaginable.

“I stay abreast of the news concerning the world economy, or should I say, the central banking Ponzi scheme. It cannot go on for ever. Debt is neither currency, nor money, nor wealth. It is slavery, a noose to be placed around the common people’s neck for the control of their labor and wealth. I believe an economic collapse will occur within a couple of years. It will be like the tulip bulb crash in 1637 in Holland when people realized that tulip bulbs really were just that, and not gold. Every world power is printing as much unbacked fiat currency as it can, and is lying about its economic figures. All economies will crash like an avalanche and be wiped out.

“Modern man having become a creature of extreme comfort and extreme ingratitude, one can only imagine how people will react when there is no more free stuff, Internet, television, cell phones, or food stamps on demand. It will be chaos. The powers that be are conditioning people for this moment by creating scapegoats. This has been done many times before, to justify the poor or destructive decisions by the criminal elite, and to provide cover for those that truly caused the trouble, notably those exposed by Father Denis Fahey.

“The US Government expects staggering life loss as a result of the collapse, and yet does nothing. Evil will be unleashed as people realize the incredible breadth and depth of the crisis, and turn their cities into unspeakable zones of violence and depravity. The population without God and morals will be hell-bent on personal survival. In an instant the modern world will be stopped in its tracks. Man will be faced with the stark reality of his weakness, his utter lack of control, his true dependence on God.

“Your Excellency, people are at a point that they can do anything with a cell-phone, but are unable to grow a potato, hammer a nail, or perform rudimentary plumbing. When the Ponzi scheme collapses, only skilled trades and the true priesthood will have any value. Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Water Management, Waste Management, mechanics, farming, animal husbandry (not factory farms), that’s about it. Young Catholic men should be encouraged to enter these trades and then to create a new Guild system. Today’s corrupt universities, presently propped up by the debt market, will be clearly worthless. The truth is needed now more than ever. Traditional Catholics must be told to embrace traditional skills, traditional roles, and traditional lives. Indeed we must abandon the Bing-Crosby-Sunday-Mass-Only-Catholicism, but we must also embrace the daily work necessary to restore Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our King and Queen in our daily lives. The faithful must be advised to prepare for the safety of their families and others in need. This involves the securing of food and water, because most supermarkets only contain a 36-hour supply of goods for the local population.”

Kyrie eleison.

Newchurch of Rot: Catholics Prepare for Changes in Communion Ritual!

Novus Ordo (Neworder) is a bastard mass, like Archbishop Lefebvre said.

Archbishop Lefebvre ora pro nobis!

Raising their hands at the Lord's Prayer. Losing the handshake and embracing the person in the next seat at the sign of peace. In an extra act of reverence, bowing before receiving the Communion host.

And undoing a lifetime of tradition by not kneeling in prayer after Communion. Instead, in a sign of the communal nature of the sacrament, worshippers will stand and sing until each person has received Communion.

American Catholics are about to experience major changes in the Communion rite as dioceses begin implementing the updated General Instruction of the Roman Missal.

Church officials here, like in the rest of the country, are gradually preparing their flocks for the change. Parishioners will begin hearing about the changes in their churches the last two weeks in September. They will receive instruction in sermons and bulletins through October and November.

Cleveland Bishop Anthony M. Pilla plans for the changes to be implemented in all of the diocese's 234 parishes by Nov. 30, the first Sunday of Advent.

The Rev. J-Glenn Murray, director of the diocesan Office for Pastoral Liturgy, said the changes will unsettle many Catholics, but the diocese hopes the uniform guidelines will help people in the pews have a richer experience of the sacrament.

"I think the current rite stresses presence and holiness in a very powerful manner," Murray said. "I think it's a vast improvement."

Diocesan bishops are now putting in place the changes approved by the Vatican and then by U.S. bishops with adaptations for American culture.

"We're taking our time. We're trying to do it well," said the Rev. Michael G. Woost, who teaches liturgical and sacramental theology at St. Mary Seminary in Wickliffe.

Perhaps the biggest change "and probably the most problematic change," Murray said, will be getting Catholics to break the habit of immediately returning to their pews to kneel in prayer after Communion. (???)

The diocese is encouraging people to return to their pews and continue to stand and sing until everyone has received Communion and the priest has sat down to pray. At that point, worshipers would kneel in private prayer.

The changes are designed to retain both the personal and social nature of the sacrament, Murray said.

"Communion is also about being in communion with the Body of Christ, the church," Murray said. "If you receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ, you make a commitment to the body of Christ, the church."

Some people may consider it an infringement on their private prayer, Woost said. But "we're really not giving up anything. We're getting so much more."

Other changes include:
Asking worshipers to raise both hands upward at the "Our Father." In some churches, people have a custom of holding hands during the prayer. The raised arms go back to the way Jesus and early church members prayed, diocesan liturgists said. They are a symbol of surrender to God and Christian belief in Jesus' victory over death, Woost said.

At the sign of peace, there is a tendency now at churches to shake hands with several nearby people. The new rite encourages people to embrace one or two people in a serious, sober gesture of reconciliation. "The meaning of the sign of peace is not hail fellow, well met," Murray said. "It is a rite of reconciliation, of unions of minds and hearts."
In a special sign of reverence, Catholics also will be asked to bow before receiving the host that they consider the body of Christ.

St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in Mentor, a test parish for some of the changes, already has adopted the practices of bowing before the Eucharist and the raising of hands at the Our Father. (??)

Joanne M. Tadych, liturgist at St. Bede, said the changes have had a profound effect on parishioners -- in particular, bowing before receiving Communion.

"It has a very calming effect. It gives you just a moment of peace to think about what you're really doing," Tadych said. "You're not just rushing through."

Congregation members said after a recent morning Mass that they like the changes.

Michael Williams, 50, said raising his hands during the Our Father "is a great way to show reverence and respect for the Lord. It's more of a sign of surrender to the Lord."

Joan Kiesel, 76, said bowing before receiving Communion "is a wonderful mark of respect."

But making these two changes has not been easy. Some parishioners prayed the Our Father with their arms at their sides or with a hybrid of clasped hands and raised arms.

Murray noted that while the new practices will be the norm in all parishes, they are being presented as invitations to individuals to show the unity of the church by all sharing the same practices.

He said no one will be forbidden from going back to the pew and immediately kneeling after receiving Communion.

At St. Bede, people uncomfortable with raising their hands during The Lord's Prayer can keep their hands folded in a gesture of respect.

Church officials and parishioners said they realize changing lifelong habits will be a challenge.
Kathleen Buse, 44, said she sometimes has to remember to bow at Communion time during Mass at St. Bede. After more than 40 years of experiencing the Communion rite one way, she said, "It's a big change."
